Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, Jane 4, 1997 - S "My name is Bryce Gowan and I wi.ll be 1 year old on Ju ne 8. My proud.Mommýy and Daddy are T1heresça and Joh n. Proud Grandparents are Wilfred Potter, Joanne Willoughby and Francis andJoyce Gowan." Have a very Happy ithday Toady! Love Mommy and Daddy FKE N wý" Aby Phyllis Lowery KENDALiCOLU Finally a little warmer weather, except when I go out to cut grass, then the sun goes in, the breeze gets up and the air turns cool and I don't know enough to go in the house and put on a jacket, ergo: a sum- mer cold. Ah the farmers seem to be working overtime catching up on the work they couldn't do late in April and the early part of May. I don't know whether any of you have noticed a row of yellow tulips that are along beside a driveway on Main Street, Orono as yous head north. Every day 1 look at themn and they always look the same. For over two weeks they have stood straight and taîl and neyer wilted. I swear if they don t change soon, 1 will get out of-the car and check to see if they are real. Mine have bloomed anid falleni apart. On.Sunday, Lyle Benider, conducted the Service anid Grant McConaghy wýas the Speaker. The,, Gathering hymns were "In The Sweet Bye and Bye",' "In The; Gardeni" and, "The Lily of The' Valley".,During the singing, the collection for Miles to Manitoba was tak en up, we are now Just past "Terrace' Bay". The ChristeCandie was lit and Prayer was said for those who had concerns. Theý choir sang, "Saviour, Saviour, Do Not Pass Me By". The children came forward, Yvonne had Otis with her again this Sunday. He is very shy around girls. He said "hi" to the boys but hung his head when he saw the girls. He said that he would like to sing a song, a country, song about everything around us. He sang "I Adore You Jesus". The children really like 'Otis', s0 do the grown up kids. Prayer was said with the children and the hymn was, "What a Friend We Have In Jesus". The children remained in the Sanctuary for the Service. The 'Prayer of Self- Examination and the Words of Assurance were given. Lyle and Yvonlne Bender sang, "Teach Me Lord". Grant chose John 4 verses 23 and 24 for the Scripture. The Sermon was titled "God Is A Spirit'. Grant said that the titie was not really what it is al'about. It is about change. We are not speaking about different denominations. where you may go to Worship. We are speaking about knowing, the Lord. Attenýding Chiurch regularly because it is the wýay you were brought up or becauise it is part of your rotii'ne does not make you a Christian. Do y ou knowthe Lord? Being borni again and knowing the Lord. is about change. We are ail seeking some- thing to change us.. God always calîs us. Sometimes through a Preacher, some- times through a friend or even a stranger. Churches are a place where you can corne and meet God. If you just want a place to meet people, join a club. God is a giving God--God wants you. H e wants you today. Wil we give ourselves? My first thought for this article cornes froffi a visit into the downtown piîd-morning on Monday. A group of bùStling mecm- bers of the Orono Horticultural Society were busy planting the- Street flow- er boxes. It was quite appar- ent1 they were thoroughly enjoying them-selves and we are sure to enjoy their efforts throughout the àummer. Members of the local Horticultural Society have beenan active group down through the yeaf s with their rnonthly meetings and their work throughout the com- How do we know about God? The Bible is the word of God. Read it and learn. You don't have to know the whole thing,, but open it and read. Grant had an orange in his hand while he was talking, he asked why we thouglit he had it? He then asked if we knew it was an orange becaus 'e he told us it was or because we could see it? The children were quick to answer. He asked what does it look like. It is round, it is orange colour, what do we do with it? We peel it, we chew.it, we swal- low il. We cani get juice from it. We can use the skins for marmalade. But an Orange is no0 good unless we use it, peel it and open it. We may know al about an orange but unless we use it--it is just an object. We may know ail about the Bible, the Word of God, but unless we use it, accept it--we will flot know change. We will not know the Lord. The hymn, "Amazing Grace" was sung. The Prayer of Thankfulness was given and the Offering gathered. The prayer of Concera and Commitment offered. The'closing hymn was, "Just A Closer Walk With Thee". 1A time of fellowship fol- lowed in the C.E. room.- Next Sunday the members of the Men's and Ladies of the Orange Order will be attend- i ng Worship at Kendal United Church. Grant McConaghy wiil be conducting the Service in the absence of Rev. Black. On Saturday, June i 4th the Manse Committee, will be holding a "Ham and Salad" Supper at Kendal United Church. Admission: aduits $8, children 12 and under $4, preschoolers free. Serving from 5 to 7 p.m. Don't forget the Beef Barbecue at Newtonville on July lst. Tickets are now available. Thought for the year... "Success is getting what you want... Happiness is wanting what you get". rnunity. It does deserve a big "thank-you". it was ýoff to North York and the Ford Theatre last week to catch lRagtime before it clos- es. Certainly not dis-appointed in the enter-tainrnent but had expected more dance and instru-mental music. The vocals, of course, were great and the sto ry line is one that should be remembered. Times, 1 would hope, have changed for the better. It did seem a sornewhat strange trip to the city using Taunton Road and Steels Avenue. It would seema that theatre has replaced birdling for the time-being. I arn looking for- ward to the Karen Kane event at the Hurinm-ingbird Centre this week. Birding has been put on the back-burner for, the past couple of weeks. That is to end with early mrnming trips into the Ganaraska forest this corning week. It is part of a forest bird rnonitoring pro- gram being conducted by a professor atGuelph University., Port Perry indeed has a rnost interesting downtown business area with sorne interestiflg stores.' The Garden Collection on the north side in the west end is a new addition having last Saturday just cornpleted its first week in business.. 1I was impressed with the creativity that evidenced itself frorn the selection of items on display.
