( mý 4 - Orono Weeýldy TmsWensday, Jtune 4, 1997 H c Darlington Soccer Club (Under 9 team) Coach Gary Nernisz extends a welcome to ahl the new players and parents to the Darlington Soccer (Under-9) team this year. He sees the '97 season as an exciting one for the team, who have been unbeaten in their first tliree garnes. Strong performances from defenders Corey Prince,' Scott Miller and Brandon Weigel, combined with solid goaltending by David Ross, have shut out the Osha'wa Kicks on two occasions. The team wishes to thank their sponsors: Biddle Engineering, Major Plumbing and National Powerskating Stayi ng, In, Touch John O'Toole Durham East MPP The Federai election will lie over before you get to read this article. Like you, 1 have watched and listened with, a great deal of interest. t wfll be two years, next week since I was eiected to the. provincial legislature on June 8th, 1995. I realize now how difficuit it was to visit every part of my riding of Durham East. To me, there does not seem to lie as many election signs about and there have not beeri too, many kriocks at my door. However, I arn sure ahl the candidates anid their cam- paign workers are giad that it is over. In the next Provincial election ini a couple of years, my riding will also lie known as Durham and will have the exact boundaries of the pre- sent Federal Durham ridîng. As you probably know, the Federal Election Commission increased the number of fed- erai ridings in Ontario from 99 to 103. During the hast provincial election, we promised to reduce the num- ber of politicîars. As prornised soon after our electiori, we passed, The Fewer Politicians Act, reducing the number of Provincial seats from 130 to 103, the same as the Federal riding. My last comment before the electiori is that we must keep Canada together and work together at ail levels of elected office. After ail, politicians are elected to serve al the people. At Queen's Park, the debate bas been strong on road safety. 1 expect, our Minister of Transportation, the Honourable AI Palladini, will introduce ouir road safety legislatiori. I have met with and spoken to a number of our local transp ortation com- for their generous contribu- ions. Assistant Coach, Ron Pither, and Manager, Kerry Powell make life a little easier for Coach Nemisz. Also wor- thy of appreciation is Dave Larsh, President of Darlington Youth Soccer League and his executive, who are responsî- ble for the great fields and the professional-looking, uni- forms; Darlington's neyer looked 50 good!, The team looks forward to an upcoming Ontario Cup garne in Uxbridge, where they corne head to head with Whitby Iroquois. panes. As---in-most issues,, there are two sides to the story. Ail transportation com- paries are very much. aware of safety. The truck drivers, as well as others using our roads, lives are at stake. Our ministry staff are strictly enforclng the driver and vehi- cie safety regulations. Our road safety campaigri has resulted in every infraction being-enforced. This intense crack down has clearly got the attention of the operators as it should. However, there have been some occasions where the inspectors may not have used common sense. It bas been brought to my attention aiso that some of our roads are now getting the repairs they so badly need. I have been given documented cases where minor vehicle faults have resulted in fines of hundreds of dollars, the plates pulled, the cargo delayed, contracts broken and the cost is not just thou- sands of dollars but, even jobs. There are over 500.peo- pIe in my riding whose family livelihood depends directly on the trucking industry. We musthave a fair and bal- anced system. This being said, ary safety violation that could cause an accident must be addressed. The unfortu- nate accidents in our area over the past couple of years have rot involved our local companies. However, we must have the highest stan- dards ard from my conversa- tions with the-small business operators, they have heard themessage and are doing theirbest to maintain safe vehicles, drivers ard jobs. SPORTS Kendal Hall News One. of t-pe highlights of this week Weis attending the first graduation class from the Durham ÇoIlege Youth Internship Apprenticeship and eighteeli completed the Automotive Service Technician Program. There were eight stlidents from high schools in ail parts of my rid- ing. As we advance to a knowledge based workplace, these graduâtes will have the skills to build their future. Over 80% o of the graduates already havg a job. Canada needs more skilled trades people and once again, Durham College bas created an opportutiity for the stu- dents, Durham College and our employer community. The Minister of Education was in attendance and was impressed with the partner- ship of the College, the four boards of education and the private sector. This program was a first in Canada. The Durham College and University Centre is i a furid raising mode and I would be proud to recommend your support for this fine institu- tion. Durham College President. Gary Polonskyis one of the most inspired and energized leaders ti our com- munity today. Congratulations to the stu- dents and staff at Durham College. The doctors of Ontario have agreed to a three year deal with the province. Doctors are critîcal to ail our health care. but so are other health care workers. I met this week with chiropractors, optometrists, home care ther- apîsts, nurses and a massage therapîst. As new patient demands emerge, our healih care system must offer people choices and alternatives to tradîtional, practîces. The changes to heaith care are far from over, as our govenment trie s to put the patient first. Ontario Nursing Association CEG, Lesley Bell recently said. "We believe that there is enough money in the health care system. It just needs to be redistributed properly".-' On June lst, the new Durham Access to Care board takes over from the Durham Home Care and the Placement and Coordination Service whiàch have organized the delivery of patient care at home or in long term care facilities. The services provid- ed and the employees will remain 'organized, pretty much as they are today but the organîzation will slowly move to a one window access for patient services. The past weekend, I was privileged to attend two anniversaries. Knox Christian School held its 4Oth anniver- sary and the celebration was attended by students and teachers from the past and the present. This school is a fine example of a community working together without one cent of government help. Perhaps the future of equal' funding will someday include ail students. The Knights of Columbus Council 6361 cel- On Sunday evening the Kendal L.O.L. held their annual Salad Supper. The members served up an excel- lent meal to a capacity crowd. Lots of salads, lots of ham and loads of home-made pies. The children were served hamburgs and liotdogs outside at no extra cost to the parents. This way the children get to eat what tliey like best and the parents can relax and enjoy their meal knowing that their children are supervised. The draw for the door prize was won by Doreen McGillvary,,a-money tree growing little sacks of money. The second draw was woný by a Kendal resident, Ralph Zazula won the $50.0 lst prize, the 2nd prize of $20.00 went to Caroline Stukenbrock of Scarborough. Next Sunday the 8th, will be the annual Parade in Kendal and then the Lodges will be taking part in the Churcli Service. Don't forget the Bingos. Next one will be held on June I 7th. The Hall lias been made easy accessible with a new ramp and was used at election in celebrating with a comrnu- nity organization that sup- ports their church, the fami- ly 'and the community at large. Both these events are remiriders to me of how much people working together cari achieve. t is also refreshing to witness -people celebrating their faith in God. My next weeks Rogers Cable 10 TV show will feature Tourism in Durham and stu- dent employment. I hope you can tune in on Sunday at 10 A.M. tinie. The kitchen and entrance have been painted and with the new windows that were installed in the Hall in 1996, the Hall is Iooking better ail the time. Every member is working liard to raise money to make improve- ments to this building which has stood here well over 100 years a nd lias served the com- munity well.
