KINDERGARTEN INFO Ail Senior Kindergarten students will corne Thursday, September 4th and Friday, Septemnber 5th to get to know their teacher and prepare for ORONO Fair. The schedule for kinder- garten classes will begin Wednesday, September 1Oth. Monday, September 8th and Tuesday, September 9th will be scheduled home visit days for our kcindergarten teach- ers. Senior Kindergarten stu- dents new to our school will have a home visit by their teacher at which time an entry date will be provided. SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER! Classes begin Tuesday, September 2, 1997 for Grade 1- 6. Monday/Wednesday Kindergarten classes being Wednesday, September lOth while Tuesday/Thursday Kindergarten classes will belng Thursday, September 1lIth. Both Senior Kindergarten Students (SR. ONLY) will attend Thursday, September 4th and Friday, September 5th to prepare for the ORONO Fair. Junior Kindergarten stu- dents will have a delayed entry in order to accommio- date home 'vIsits. Kirby, Newcastle, Newtonville and Orono Public Schools par- ticipated in a Base Bail tourna- ment May 28. The Orono Public School sent twoteams to the tournament. One of their teams finished in first place and the other team fin- ished in 3rd place. The flrst place team did flot loose a game ail day. Well done kids. The teams were coached by Mr. Paul Martin. The students of both teams are pictured above. The programmes and safe, healthy school enviromnent could not have occurred with- out the support of the entire communtty. Working together the'staff were able to implement the ftrst year of a new Reading programme In the Primary Division and a new Mathematics programme in the Junior Division. Teachers were also worklng with ii- dren to help them recognize what -good work" is and on helping them set personal goals for improvement. Our Grade 6 parents saw the evi- dence of this work durlng stu- dent-led conferences held lni May. The fMe efforts of staff and students will be bufit upon next year as the Interactions Math progranmme continues to be implemented from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6. The First Steps reading program will move Into the Junior division whtle the Primary teachers pilot the Wrtttng & Spelltng compo- nents for the Board. As we conttnued building on our academtc strengths, staff have also worked hard to offer students opportun- ties in house league and school teain sports, Orff Instruments, choir, -story- telling, poetry writing, dance, drania, readlnig, earth day cel- ebrattons, technology days and our annual participation in the parades and displays at the ORONO Fair.. 0f course, as we reflect on the year, we need to take a moment to, thank the coin- munity for it's support. ORONO has a dedicated School Counicil chaired by Pam Hodgson. Good atten- dance at meetings has led to examinatton of curriculum, achievement, Ministry and Board policies as well as sup- porting classroom co-cunricu- lar activities and the hot lunch programme. Marie Nelson has worked diligentlY as our volunteer co-ordînator to develop a teain of parent volunteers and "Grand Friends", seniors who regu- larly read to students. Local business has supported the school and have helped with some of our "theme" days. In surmnary, it really does "take an entire village to raise a child."- ORONO Public School counts, itself lucky to be part of this village! sincerely with thanks, Catherine Montreufi Principal. SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL Decisions were made to purchase new Team shirts, risers for choir and to fund the Grade 6 BBQ. Cathy Montreuil will look into the cost of choir vests. Ideas for celebratlng the ORONO Town Hall Centennial were dis- cussed. Emphasis for next year will be on reviewing homework policy, fiindratsing and the review of the provin- ci math, reading and writ- ing assessment. Next meeting: Septemaber 8, 1997 at 7:00 p.m. The ORONO School Advisory Council election Is scheduled for Monday, September 29, 1997 at 7:00 p.m. Any parent/guardian of a child attending the school who Is at this meeting may vote. (NOTE: only those nominees who accept either on the form, by phone, or in person at this meeting may stand for council). Once the council is ti place, the individual offices will be elected by the mem- bers of council. DANCE FEST On May 29th, Mrs. Harntlton-Wtcks and our reg- ular Dance Club participants j oined other schools tnri Board at Dance Fest. This celebration of dance had everyone participattng in dances they had learned at school as well as learning a new dance or two! 3-PITCH TOTJRNAMENT On Wednesday, May 28 the ORONO P.S. 3-pitch teains travelled to Kendal to partIcipate ln the Annual ASG Tournament. We had a beautiful day and ail partici- pants dtsplayed great skIlls and excellent behaviour. As a bonus, one of our teams won lst place, they didn't lose a gaine ail day! It is always a pleasure to take ORONO stu- dents to sports events as they act i a mature mariner and behave appropriately.
