We hear that it has been raining in Western Ontario but so far not here and the gardens are beginning to need it. Sunday was a beautiful dày, really warm up until six p.m. and then there must have been a shower nearby and it got cooler. There was a good turnout for Church. The Kendal Orange Band led a Parade of Orange Brothers and Sisters through the streets of Kendal and then the men and ladies of the Lodges and their guests took part in the Church Service. The Service opened with the singing of "O Canada" and the presentation of the Flags. Grant McConaghy wel- comed ail and gave the Invitation to Worship. The Christ Candle was lit and Grant asked Don Peddar to explain what the "Miles to Manitoba" was ail about. While the singing of the Gathering Hymns took place a collection was taken up, we are now over the half-way mark, 2 more weeks to go. The Gathering Hymns were, "Stand Up, Stand Up For Jesus", "Shall We Gather At The River" and "Will Your Anchor Hold". With Carol Gardner at the piano, Don Peddar and Grant McConaghy sang a beautiful duet, "In Jesus Name". Grant said that the children could stay in their seats but that he would like a few words with them. He asked them if they knew what Protestant meant. He told them that when he was grow- by Phyllis Lowery ing up it meant to him any non Catholic. He said children could be obstinate creatures--he knows that he was. When he was told by someone to sit down, he wouldn't do it but when that person's voice changed and he was told to sit down, he rec- ognized the voice of authority and he sat, but inside he was still standing. That is what is called having the right to have your own thoughts--you may recognize authority but you are free to think what you will. The hymn, "Onward Christian Soldiers" was sung. The Prayer of Self- Examination was said and the Words of Assurance given. The Ladies of Kendal Hills L.O.B.A. gathered around the piano and sang "The Lord's Prayer". Bro. Norm McGilvary of Kendal L.O.L. read the first Scripture Mark 16:15-18. Sis. Phyllis Lowery Chaplain of Kendal Hills L.O.B.A. read from Ephesians 2:8 & 9. Grant chose as the title of his Sermon "I Am A Witness, I Am A Protestant". He said that in the olden days Bibles were large hand-written books and were chained to the Altar, only Priests were allowed to read them and say what they meant and often what they told the people was wrong. They had rituals they must follow and when they died it often cost the family a great deal to get them out of purga- tory, and no one knew if it really did. With the coming of the printing press and the printing of Bibles, people began to read them and found many things that they had been taught were not what the Bible really meant and they began to protest. In Germany, Martin Luther broke away from the Priests teachings and that was the beginning of Protestant Religion and Protestant Churches. Many other Churches began and they began to form their own rituals. Grant said that when he was asked to preach this Sunday, he began to look into what the Orange Order was all about. He read of King William and King James. How in those days to be the King of England they fought and whoever was strongest, was King. William was Protestant and James was Catholic. William led his sol- diers into battle and James stayed where he was safe and sent his soldiers to fight. William won and became King. William was brave and so Protest was the leading Faith in England. Martin Luther read in the Bible that anyone could enter the Kingdom of God, if they believed in God. Things go in cycles, as a baby we soon leam that if we cry we will be fed, we will be picked up. As we grow we learn how to express our- selves, we go to school to learn how to make money, how to become a success. We try to be just like others and by the time we are adults we have become a mess and then we begin to wish for the sim- ple life when things were uncomplicated. Jesus said, unless you become as a little child, you can not enter the kingdom of God. He did not mean that you had to become a baby--he meant that you must become honest and express yourself as a child does. When a child wants something they say so--they are honest. They are not afraid to ask. If you want something from God--for God's sake, ask. Be honest as a child and ask: God is available. He is there. You might say, how can I believe what I cannot see? You must have faith. You must ask God, that is what children do--they ask over and over again. They don't give up when they want something. That is what you must do if you want to know God. You must have the want before you can have what you ask for. Children are taught fear, they are taught how not to be Tell them the facts of life and deatb. j Tell them the number one killer of teens in Canada is car crashes! Collisions! Bad drivingl Then tell them you're giving them the Young Drivers of Canada program the most demanding driving course in North America. They11 learn risk perception. Emergency s honest. Children are taught prejudice. They are taught every evil thing they may do. Do you realize that you are the product of every person you have met in your lifetime. You may find that as you grown older you are begin- ning to sound like your father, express the same opinions as he did. We pick up manner- isms from others. We have become a race of isms, we have become a mess. We were born simple and we are the ones who have made life complicated. So many differ- ent churches were formed-- Puritans, Quakers, Methodists, Salvation Army and then along came the Pentecostals. They really threw a monkey wrench in the works. Members came from all denominations. Some said they didn't come they were thrown out of their own church because they dared to question. They were all look- ing for something. Grant said that he joined the Pentecostal Church in 1969 because he was looking for the truth. Then in the 1980's things began to change in the other churches, even in the United Church and now he finds him- self back once more in the United Church. It is not enough to say I believe--we must really trust and truly believe. The hymn "Bringing in the Sheaves" was sung. The Prayer of Thankfulness given. The Offering was taken up by Sis. Diane Polley and Bro. Chad Switzer. A presentation was made to the Church by the Master of Kendal LOL 405, Bro. Dean Polley and everyone was invited to the Orange Hall for lunch. The closing hymn was (continued page 9) braking. The secrets of collision avoidance. And so much more. Kids are always thrilled to get Young Drivers as a present.
