Young Women's Cristian Assoc. - summer program Stayi ng In Touch John O'Toole Durham East MPP On Friday, June 27th at 1:30 a.m., I arrlved home from my w;ork ut the Ontario Legislature. The House has adJoumned for the sumner, I hope. Let me explain this. Thits past week, we were con- tinutag the 3rd day of debate on changes to the Standing Orders. Let me assure you that Is a lot of talIng (9 Hrs.) from approximately 3:00 p.m. to midnight. We were sup- posed to be complete on the rule changes, except that there was a trlck played to delay the proceedlngs. Al three parties use these tac- tics to delay the government's agenda and thut is fair accordlng to' the rules. However, as we adj oumned at Thursduy midnight, it looked as though, the House will be culed back some time in July. This debate is ail about making the Ontario Legislature more efficient. The Standing Order changes proposed are aimost identicai to the rules used ta Ottawa. Ail three parties wlll bave to abide by the rules, so I per- sonally don't see why ail the fuss. Both of the last two gov- ernments, Uiberal and NDP, made mile changes but some- how they are différent. Having worked ta tadustry for over 30 years, I think we should make more effective use of our time, while at the same time respectlng the rules ta the Ontario Legisiature as they bave ta our nation's cap- ital? Our summer schedule Is as follows. I will be taking three weeks vacation. My wlfe and I wlll be traveling to Halifax, Nova Scotia to visit our son who is serving ta the Canadian Armed Forces at Shearwater. We wfll aiso be vislting London, Wndsor and St. Catherines to establish residences for our three cil- dren for their university next year. Your constituency office will be clos ed from July 28th to August: 11lth. We will con- tinue to respond to our daily messages left on our answer- ing machine. I will be back to Queen's Park ta the ast week of July and ail of August to travel the: province on com- mittee work. The House is offlcîally, adjourned until Augut l8th. My reports to the nwspaper will be much more brief and perhaps not weekly. However,_ I will be ta daihy contact with my office and wihh release information as it becomes available. July lst, 1997, we cehe- brate Canada's l3Oth birth- day. This may evoke an impression of a country wlth along hlstory. However, in terms of nations and hlstory, we are a very young country. We, as a: country, have a proud history, a valued pre- sent and 'a future with chal- lenges and hope. I hope everyone jotas ta and cehe- brutes this beautiful country ut one of the muny local events. I arn fortunate to be tavlted to ýsome greut festivi- ties like, the Clurington Museum's: Canada Day annu- ah celebrution, a Citizenship Ceremony in Whitby on June 28th, Broolin on June 29th and Palmer Park, Port PerrY on Tuesday, July lst. Truthfully, I neyer realized some of the privileges that go with this office. However, I certainly will remember as 1 grow old, where 1 was on Canada's 130th birthday. A partial llst of legisiation being consldered over the summner Is: Bill 96 The Tenant Protection Act, Bill 99 - The Workers' ,Compensation Reformn Act, 1996, a series of Red Tape Elimination Bills are being held up, Bill 125 - The Wheel Safety, Bill 138 - The Comprehensive Road Safety Act, Bill 136- The Public Sector Transition Stabllity Act, 1997, Bil 139 - The Flsh and Wildlife Conservation Act 1997, Bill 140 - The Financial Services Commission of Ontario Act 1997, Bill 142- The Social Assistance Reformn Act 1997.
