A mobile stage was placed on Temperance St. in front of Town Hall. Local talent was featured on that stage from 6 la Arthur Black WeIl, it's been a month nowý. The uncontrollable tremnors in my hands have vanished. I dont seemn to be gibberlng spontaneously or throwing my arms over'my face any more. I haven't had a savage flashback for three nights in a row. I think perhaps I'm ready to talk about it. Driving in Italy, I mean. 1 spent two weeks -last month in the rolling his of Tuscany, about an hour's drive from Florence. Well. about-an hour's drive in sleepy, conventional Canadian terms, I mean. In terms of Italian driving I was probably about six and a haif minutes fromn Florence. Although the trip seemed to take several lifetimes. It's difficuit to flnd words to describe driving i Italy. I'm a bit of a leadfoot myseif and I've seen my share of auto- motive Armageddons. I've been sideswiped in Montreal and rear-ended in Vancouver and tailgated in New York and I've even braved the 401 out- side Toronto at the start of a holiday weekend. But none of that prepared me for Italy. First of ail the roads -- as i most of Europe -- are much narrower than we Canucks are used to. And twistier, with lots of hairpin tumns and sud- den junctions. And then there are the Italian drivers., I can say quite sincerely that every Italian I met on my holiday was polite, friendly, helpful. generous, kind, and thoughtflil. Until he or she got behind to il p.m. Pictured above are the Rock Band "Above Ground", from Orono. Band members are:, Tyson Briden, Jessica Gorham, Tom Cox, Mark Trumbull and Mike Dreslinski. Clarington entertainers the wheel of a car. The act of driving an auto- mobile transformns the aver- age Italian -- signor or signora -- into a ravening marauder. A speed freak. A power mon- ger. Jacques Villeneuve with PMS. The mission of every Italian driver is to pass your car. Rfght now. And they will. They will pass you on tumns, in towns, on huIs, in tunnels, on blind curves. -Once I was passed on. a two lane bridge. By a dump truck. Italians do not signal when they pass. Nor have they heard of Elmer The Safety Elephant o r the old one-car- length-for-every-ten-kph adage. They believe in zero car lengths between vehicles. At any speed. As for tailgating -- you couldn't calI what Italians do just before they pass you 'tail- gating.' Italian cars attemnpt copulation with your car. The officiai speed limit on the Autostrada -- Italy's superhighway system --is 130 kilometers per hour, but if you ever tried to observe that lin-it you would die very quickly. Most vehicles rou- tinely maintain at least twice that speed. The rest go even faster. It's no better off the Autostrada. Oh, the drivers ratchet it back a bit -- just enough so their cars don't fly off the road -- but they still who wiIl be performing on Friday, Augu§t 15-', at the CNE are: Ferai Child, Stonehaven, Ken Howard Jazz Quartet, Theatre Danc@ Academy, The Wilmot Creelk Entertainment Group, Mark~ Sullivan and Chaser. hare along at speeds guaran- teed to give a North American driver a heart attack. The only tbing worse than being on an Itaian road in a car is being Ofi an Italian road without a car. You get the impression that for most Italian drivefs, pedestrians are simply aïfi exotic form of potential roadlkil1. My guide- book actuallY offered this road crossing advlce: -Walk out slowly and1 confidently" it says, "glaring at the traffic and maintalpiflg a deter- mined pacê. The traffic should stop. Or at least swerve." Yeah, rigflt. And if that works you ndight want to try walking on wrier. Would I eVer go back to Italy? Listen. Italy is easily one of the ffost beautiful places I have ever visited and peo ple -- ofice you divest themn of car keys -- are a total delight. The fêod is wonderful,, the scenery is spectacular, the art treasg.res are price- less. and the wine fs just grand. So would I go back to Italy?
