MNR & Mississaugas improve island road MNR's Aurora District and the Mssissaugas of Scugog Island First Nation both agreed last week to contribute funding for improvements to the stretch of Durham Regional Road 7, which runs through the northern part of Scugog Island inside the Crown Land area. The road leads to a public boat launch raxnp onto Lake Scugog. "Our -partnership on this project with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island means that the general public will have safer and improved access to the property," sald Natural Resources Minister Chris Hodgson.,'At the same time, the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation will be able to reach lands they have leased from the govemnment more.safely." Scugog Island Crown Land covers 182 hectares of Woods and fields open, to the public for fishing, picnicking, swim- ming, hiking and boating. Pheasant hunting and water- fowl hunting take place at regulated periods during the year. Overnight camping -and camp fires are not permitted on the property. "The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation consider this partnership with MNR as a positive initia- tive," said Chief Rennie Goose. 'The upgrade to the road will' eliminate the extremely haza rdous condi- tions that our members have encountered li the past when using it. This road Improve- ment project is really a win- ner for all parties concerned." "We anticipate the 'Island Road' improvement on the Sc-ugog Island Crown Land will also benefit the Township of Scugog by allowing some of the heavy traffic at the boat launch in Port Perry to use the Scugog Island launch as an alternative,"' added Aurora District Area supervisor Glenn Price.
