I don't think there is envy involved on mny part. (1 would like to mnake lots of mioney too) but these highi salaries paid to a player playing bis favorite sport is crimninal. Nothling against Maddux, he's a great pitcher, but where is ahl this going to end? These players are being offered more and mnore. Where does.the money comne fromn? Fans in the stadiumi keep paying highier prices. Stadiumis get bigger to hold more fans. Broadcasting corporations pay miore and miore for the rights to televise sporting events, and sponsors pay mnore and more to advertisers.. This trend is also happening in Basketball. Michael Jordan is playing for $30 mnillion pîus for one year, Shaq O'Neil playin'g for $100 mnillion plus over seven years. Remiember theno defunct USFL? Steve Young (quarterback)ý signed withi the Los Angeles Express in the 1980's for $40 illion over eight yecars. NowN the NHL i s starting to pay the big bucks as well. The Vancouver Canucks recenly signed Mark Messier for $20 mulfion over three years. It is clear to mne that the salaries paîd to professional athletes are going up at a f 1aster rate thian than the rest of uis.Ir, the long run, this trend can only hurt the fan, if it hasn't done so already,. The future of pro sports is on thec line and somiething bias to be done. What? Those involved in professional sports seemn to be living in their own little fairy land. Most people will consider thempselves Well- off ý1ihey make close to $100 thousand a year. and tliat is still a dreamn. I can't hielp but think of hiow miany disadvantaged people could be helped with one professional players salary. Think of it: reduced welfare, social beniefits and unemiploymient. By redirect- ing ahl this m-oney to the other side of the economnical ladder, we could balance the scales a bit.
