With the return of coach John Witheridge from holidays and the guesr coaching of local pitcher Pete Landers, who worked with the pitchers on the team, proved to>be a winning combination. The girls scored 4 runs in each of the first three innings and followed up with 5 more in the fourth with Vanessa and Ashley B. leading the way scoring 3 runs each. The 2 run fifth provided the offensive highlight of the night as Marley crushed a high fastball for a home run that had the Solina outfielder chasing it alI the way to the tennis court. On Defence, the strong pitching of Ashley, Vanessa and Katie was supported by double plays started by Marley and Katie and some On July 3 1, Gary Bridger's tyke soccer team posted anoth- er wffn by defeating Newcastle Block in a close contest 2-1. This was a welI-played game by both tearns. Cory Konopka and Tyler Webster shared goaltending duties while tearn mates Dillon Ernpey and Michelle Bridger each scored a goal to lead the offense and Lucas Martin played a very strong defensive garne for #2. solid second base play by Becky. With this 19-11 win to build on, the girls are Iooking forward to playing their sec- ond of the 3 games this week on Wednesday night at the Fairgrounds. Playoffs are just around the corner and the Irwin Tax Girls seem to be gearing up for the challenge already. Last Wednesday, the girls returned home to face a tough Tyrone squad. They appeared to be well on their way to another victory as they outscored the visitors in each of the first three innings to jump out to -a 9-4 lead. Michelle Henderson did much of the damage, driving in 4 runs in her-first 2 at bats. Marley continued to demon- strate her power at the plate as she sent several pitches into the woods, just fouI, before cranking out 2 more home runs, one in each of the first two innings. The defence also looked as solid as it had on On August 7,' Orono #2 defeated Orono #3 4-1. The were scored by Lucas Martin with two, Micheli Bridger and Courtney Elson with one apiece. The goaltenders for this match were Tyler Webster and Christopher Lunn. A good effort was made by Meghan Bail, Felicia Brown, Megan Ernst, Bernard (B.J.) Reilly, Ryan Wood and Darren MacGregor Orono #3 Atoms Brus-h by Maltar Painting Coach Dan Doyle's #3 Atom soccer team completed back- to-back wins when first, on July 30, Orono 43 met wÎth New Coffee Tirne' and came home with 6-O win. Mark Spiers and Taylor Doyle split the goaltendîng duties and shared the shutout, Orono goals were scored by Kristof Balling with two, Adam Wood also with two, Taylor Doyle scored one as did Josh Flynn. The second end of the back- to-backwins carne when the Orono #3 Atoms met up with Maltar Painting on August 6 which was a very crucial garne for the club. Mark Spiers was given the task to play net which turned out to be his most brilliant per- formance of the season helping bis team to a 5-2 vîctory over the Paînters. Coach John Witheridge had to trade in coach's hat for his umpire's hat and confidefltly turned the reins of the fTaxers' over to coaches Dopg and Devon. Despite some very pro Tyrone calîs by the aèting umpire, the eight playefs frorn Orono exacted re,ýenge on the Tyrone team that beat them Wednesday. Ashley 0~. cleared the bases in both the first and sec- ond innings aM. the-tenth batter but the umpire called her out both times a the plate. Dianne Who had just returned from holidays and iound out about the garne while she was watching her twîn brother's garne got to the garne just in time to get t-WO clutch singles. Ashley and Vanessa had much better support from their field- ers and limited Tyrone to only 12 runs. Marley and Vanessa had five hîts cach. leading the girls to 27 run!$. Both teams were evenly matched throughout the entire gamne. however, North Scarborough Lightning mani- aged to slip one by the Reactors' goalie just secondus before the nfaîf-time xvhistle. The Reactors put some pressure on in the last I15 minutes of the game, but were unable to capi- talize on their scoring opportu- nities.
