LETTERS TO THE EDITOR After reading the story in the local papers of a propos- ai by Paila Lishnian to move her lÙr-manufactûiring busi- ness to C-larington, there was one issue thiat didn't appear to be addressed. Followmng the Orono area resident's concernis of putting industries on agricultural land with possible environ- mental damiage and increase traffie on rural roads. Bill Lishman stressed the plan would be in keeping with the couple's commnitment to the environment. This includes the building of an 'earth- friendly architecture' on the site of an old gravel pit. The voice in the coverage of this story, however, is the ini- tial procedure before the tan- ning and dying of fixe beaver peits prior to anriving at the Lishmans who process them into fur knitted garments. Have the Lishmans pelt supplier in South Carolina implemented any sustainable initiatives to replace these animais? Paul Reesor - Bowmianville TO ALI, 0F US WHO CABE The talk around town these days is al'about Paula and Bill Lishman planning to come tW Orono. I do not personally know al fixe details and plans but 1 amn aware that some residents are concerned about the impact of the water. This town should say wel- com-e to the Lishmnans. They both are unique in their busi- nesses. Paula is known worldwide for hier garrnents and Bill is also well knowvn. our residents may also benefit by getting a job. We alI know that there are not too many jobs coming in these days but many leaving due to cutbacks. We need more businesses coming this way. We àlready have many out- siders who moved here and started small businesses and they like it here. We don't have too many empty store fronts here. There is always softxeone who is wiling to give it a try and we ail have neigh- bours who are not from here but are just like everybody else glad to live in a unique village with beautiful parks. A lot of people get involved. Look at the bard woring peo- ple at the Hall board. TrYing s0 hard to keep it alive. So don't say we hardly know anybody anymiore. If it was not for outside people moving here and liking it here, this Town would not do s0 well. So you see things are neyer as they were. We do not want that, we want to go for- ward. Support each other and keep this village alive and friendly. Tina Van Alebeek Fairwinds Antiques & Chocolate Outlet LE'ITR TO THE EDITOR: My name isBilllWoods. We moved to Orono in August 1973 to enjoy the pastoral life style. We have always believed the creeks, especial- ly the headwaters are a num- ber 1 prlorit.y. It's a known fact, that the farther upstream a develop- ment occurs the greater the impact on the stream. Now, wiith the proposed fur factory, monster houses, golf course and airport the Wilmot will suffer degradation from fer- tilizer, pesticides, chlorine and sait pollution. Also a series of ponds will raise water temperatures of the small feeder creek that emp- ties tato the Wilmot, thereby raising the latter's tempera- ture to causing damage to prime trout habitat. This creek is a jewel. Why tamnish it? A second priorlty is the traffic problems that will intensify with the new devel- opment. There has been talk of stop lights which will necessitate grade cutting on both sides of the valley. 'm quite sure this will be an extremely expensive bur- den on taxpayers. These lights will significantly rais e the accident rate. 1. have per- sonally been present at numerous fatal accidents with acconipanying major injuries at this dangerous site. Perhaps council would approve zoning changes to allow a funeral parlour and wreaking yard at fixe site to take advantage of such a steady supply of raw materi- aIs. Through the 70's and 8's the odd plane used Wilf Hawke's airstrip. Now in fixe 90s, under new ownership it is a veritable hot bed of al types of noisy planes. Often. callous pilots in yellow train- ers do 4ower dives over your, yard. It's sickening to thinlk of more of this activity with a fly ta community. Some business people will not agree with those of us who care about the eniron- ment and rural lifestyle, plac- ing monetary gains as thI-e ultimate goal. It's thecir choice in a true demiocracy. 11n 1992, a prominent. Orono buIsi- nessman said, "Who gives aI G*** about thie creek." This appalling statemnent Shows we have people of thîs caliber - ý 1 ý ý- -ýi '... . 1. Mma ý
