Prior to opening lis Orono campaign office on Friday niglit, Cecil Mackesey gave an opening campaign speech in front tlie the Orono Town Hall. In that'speech he told the audience that lie w as the candidate with tlie "freshi voice, fresh ears and new vision for our future." Cecil Mackesey is runining agains t Diane Hamre for the mayors job in C larington. Mr. Mackesey liopes the ciizens ini the rural commu- nities find tlie Orono Campaign office a couve- nience to contâct and visit. After tlie speech thepublic was invited td the campaign office at 5351 Main St. to meet with Mr. Mackesey. At 8 o'clock that sarne evening- Mabel hosted a Itmeet the candidatet' evening in lier cafe, wliere tlie public was invited po share ideas witli Mr. Maclkesy over a cup of coffee. replied with sincerity that she enjoys working and being, arouncl young people. She aiso fulfilis the task of coaching- rnidget girls' basketball. Ms. Fluke attended Brock University where she cornpieted lier undergraduate degree in Physical Education. She really liked' Brock University because it was a small scliool. After frnishing University she went on to attend Teacliers College at Saint Bonaventure University in New York State. Ms. Fluke stated that while, attending Teachers College, "it was great to learn about the different education systems and everyone-was really friendly." There were great outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, and mountain biking nearby that sparked the interest of Ms. Fluke.- When she liad finishied aIl her education she tauglit at CD)CI West (Cobourg West)and now is teaching grade fine Geography and grade ten History, at Clarke. It was a joy to talk to Jessica Fluke. Her friendly and cheerful nature is what makes a good teacher. Later on in the conversation Ms. Fluke kindly volunteered information about why she enjoyed teaching, liere, at Clarke Higli School. "The teachers and students are really friendly and although the school is small, that is what makes it easier for the new students and staff that corne in each year." It is clear that Mg., Fluke enjoys the role of teaching and the atrnosphere at Clarke. Wle, the students and staff at Clarke, are very fortunate to have her at our school. --Lisa Johnson FUND RAISING WeIl i is that time of year again, and Clarke High Sehool is launching its annual fund raising camnpaign. This is your chance to support your local high school and satisfy your sweet tooth. We are pleased to announce that this year we are selling chocolate almonds, caramnels, mints and raisins, from the World's Finest Chocolates. Our campaign is scheduled to begin on October 9th, 1997 and will end October 23rd, 1997. Ail the money raised will be distributed to support the numerous activiies at Clarke. We are confident that this year's fund raising campaign is going to be a huge success and will, generate enthusiasm and schooi spirit tlirougliout Clarke and the surrounding communities. Thank you, in advance, for your support. --Rosanna Yankanah Clarke Higli Sehool News Well another year is in ful swing at Clarke Higli School and this year a new group of reporters will be bringing you ail of the news from Clarke. The intrepid writers are Ceni Evans, Lisa Johinson, and Rosanna Yankanali. University Seminars Over the course of the next two months, Clarke will be visited by representatives from various universities and colleges in Ontario. -In mid- September, a liaison from Queen's University gave an informative seminar on course selection, extra curricular activities, living in residence and the facilities on the campus of the university. Extra information (about tlie aforementioned subjects) was included in a bookiet that was lianded out to ail the students attending the seminar. Other universities and colleges that are planning to visit Clarke during the next eiglit weeks include: University of Toronto, Trent University, Durhiam College, Ryerson Un iversity, Waterloo University, Brock University, Sir Sanford Fleming, McMaster University, Guelph University, Western University, Wi lfred Laurier, Nipissing University, York University and the University of Ottawa. 1An important date to note is October 28th when ail Ontario universities will be holding semninars at Eastdale High Scliool, in Oshawa, from 7:30-10:30 pm. This wiil give graduating students the opportunity to attend seminars witi tlieir parents and ask the liaisons questions. For students considering furthering their education in another province, representatives from various universities around Canada will be holding seminars at schools in the municipal district. On October 6th, university liaisons from universities in the eastemn provinces will be visiting Eastdale Collegiate from 7:00- 9:30 pmn. On October 2th, representatives from Quebec universities will be holding seminars at Cobourg District Collegiate Institute East, in Cobourg, from 12:30-2:30.
