OxooWeeldylnies, Wedniesday, October 29, 1997f -:3 __ Love £4ommy, Dafd2I, ye(anff Dan Darlington Hydro United Way The Charity Trust/United Way campaign at Darllngton Generating Station Is in ful swing and the resuits are Impressive. The campaigri kicked off on Wednesday, September 24th' with an employee car wash and bar- becue. There have been sev- eral speclal events during the campaign and to date employee pledges total over $150,000. Although the final resuits won't be known until dloser to the end of November, Darlington employees have once again shown their com- mitment to the community and their generous spirit of giving. The third and final Pancake Breakfast of this year's campaign was held today Wednesday, October 29th. LETTER TO THE EDIT OR: Mr. Editor: I read rvth interest the let- ter from Mr. and Mrs. Scott, and also another column entitled "Newcastle Residents Fear Concerris Not Being Heard," ln -the October 22 issue of the TMmes. I would appreciate the opportunity to respond to some of the accusations and set the record stralgbt. On the issue of the hotel. The portion of the lake front approved for development under the Region Official Plan bas a tourlst node desîgna- tion wbich allows among other things a hotel. I'm sur- prlsed someone would forget to mention thîs., "Staff cer- tainly didn't ln the public meeting." Durham Reglon does not have a flrst class hotel, although most lake front municipalities bave been pur- suing this goal for years. A couple of years ago the Ontario Traffic Conférence held lt's convention in Whitby and Clarington because ln Durham we do not have a hotel convention centre large enough to host these events. If we in fact had a hotel and convention centre of some slze, we could draw far more revenue and business to the municipality. I have person- ally attended conventions in other municipalities, some wth far less population than Clarington with major facii- ties to attract these events. The Casino aspect I also found interesting. Councillor Scott brouglit forward a motion that discussion be beld wth charitable fundrais- ers within our municipality before a decision was made on this matter. Council sup- ported hlm. So if Ct developer in ques- tion is still purs3uing a casino by some means it's obvlous because no decision bas yet been taken by the municipal- ity. Please remember the Province said they would flot impose or allow a casi- no in any municipality that didn't want it. Counicil wfi have an opportunity in the future to deal wlth casinos. Alternatives 'A or B per- tatning to -the safety of the "Hole In The Wall" under- pass-I listened intently about ail the problems that were occurrlng there. It seems some people again had a problem hearlng the staff report. The developer at bis expense will bave to inake substantive improvements to the intersection under the direction of town staff to improve the safety factor, a problem that according to local residents currently exists. The mu.nlclpalty, flot the developer, will set the traffic limite for specific thresholds, and if any prob- lems occur building*perrits wifl bcecut off. The developer then bas a choice, widen the underpass, build a new overpass at Toronto Street or cease devel- opment of the area. 1 do flot tbink it eau be any plainer thazi that. in the mean Urne safety of the underpass wlll bc improved, lncluding a new walk way for residents at the underpass. Present estimates place the cost of either option between 3 and 5 million dollars. At least the developer will have recovered some of bis investment, by that Urne, to re-invest ti one solution or the other, to brlng about a long term solution for present and future residents. Mr. Editor. having spent some nine years iii public life and retirlng fro i t, I also amn aware of how many times only one side of an issue seems to be brought forward at election Uirne for differlng reasons. Hopefulfly the inlformnationi Ive submnitted will help clear up some misconiceptions that bas created sonie rather curi- ous abberratioris. Yours truly.
