Editor Marg Zwart Setting the stage As 'of Monday, teachers and students across Ontario are back in the classroom. What has changed since teachers started walking the picket uine? Have any of their concerns been addressed? Will Bill 160 pass into law unscathed? Likely. People have feit very strongly about the nature of, this piece of legisiature. But most parents took the interruption of education like any good Canadian citizen would; in stride. In the end what has changed? The government just made a cool $250,000, less the $4OIday for families providing childcare receipts. That'sl/3 of their proposed $667,000 sav- ings from the system. A simple solution would be to cut the schooi year by 30 teacbing days. The government will have their savings, and no teaching jobs will be lost. Grade 13 could be saved for making up those iost days. What now? Do the teachers take their job action inside the schools? Can Harris win on ail fronts. Recent c olumns in the Toronto Star and the Globe and Mail dlaimt that-the real power lies with the five or six unelect- ed people who advise the -Premier. Gary Carr, MPP for Oakville South says the power cir- cie that is running things is not willing to listen to, anyone inside or outside of government if there is dissent. The formula has been written. It worked in Alberta, it'll work here. Slash and cut for the first two years of their mandate. Damage control in year three, tax break in year four. Guaranteed re-election to repeat the cycle. With best regards, Yvonne Matland LEIER TO THE EDITOR: I arn a parent of five chil- dren in the Durham Region Public Elementary School system, and 1 fully support the courageous action taken by our teachers these past two weeks to draw public attention to a dangerous piece of legisiation which would remove power and decision- makzing frorn the local grass- roots level and centralize It in the hands of a few poiticians, most of whom are not in the teachlng profession. They have succeeded in raising the profile of this Issue and exp osing the Tory govern- ments' agenda. I wrote this song as a tribute to thern, to thank them for their willing- ness to put their pay cheques on the line and take a stand for their convictions. I hope you wiil print it.
