Orono Weely imes, Wednesday, Noveraber 12, 1997 - 3 n ne On lune 11," 1997 Denise joy Wright and Alex Heaney CHean A' were united in marriage at Kensington United Church, h ere rr Kensington, Prince Edward Island. Denise is the daugh- rch d I . n'tl t an U 0 'u 1 ter of Debbie Roche of Iona, P.E.I., granddaughter of udaugh te in 991 1. - . j w u Elgin and Madeline Héard of Newcastle and great-grand Ldaughterof Mrs. Royal Hall of Bowmnanville. Alex . -is the son of'Harold and Libby Heaney of Kensington, P.E.L FRIOM AROUND HOME by Roy Forrester Cbatty Little Critters Over the past week our project has been the planting of young fruit- bearing trees around the perimeter of the small plantation in our back two acres. The purpose is to endeavour to attract more birds. The plantings include June Berry, Wild Raisin, Black Elderberry.,Mountain Ash and two varieties of Dogwood. AIl varieties were started from seed collected twoand three years ago which are now ready for transplanting. It has brought us in contact with what goes on in the littie bit of bush and thoughts of past exper- iences. The Scotch Pine plantation has always been home for a number of red squirrels and stili is. They can be heard even bef ore you enter the bush and may well increase their chatter as you invade their domain. They are quick a-foot as they travel through the tree tops, along the limbs and down -the trunks. They do protect their own littie piece of property.from others of their own kind and one can witness fast pursuits. 1Over the past month these chatty critters have been busy creatlng their larder for the wmter. You can hear and see the cones drop through the trees to the ground after being chewed off by the squirrels who then collect themn and place them in small piles. In one case a brush pile is in us e as a storage area and it has Lo contain at least a couple of bushels of cones. One can certainly enjoy a red squirrel, comfortably perched on a small limb de- scaling a cone for its seeds. They handle the cone so weil and quickly with their front feet. Unfortunately red squirrels -are also somewhat camnivorous and some years ago raided one of our birdhouses contalning young leaving but a few bones on the roof. In another past instance we witnessed a mother moving her young family. At least we expected it was'a' mother. The squirrel was carrying something in its mouth, which turned out to be a young squirrel rolled up in a bail. We viewed it while it stopped to get a better grip. It made three passes along the rail fence with tbree young who were being taken to a new residence. The red squirrel is not only chatty but also ingenious, crafty and active. We do enjoy them in the plantation back of the house which surely is an ideal environment for them. Up to this point the reds haves tayed away from the bird feeder leavlng that territory to the grey squirrels. GoY figure! Siaring a Heaithier Futur 1 IlRTIIea(MUI1D KEI NDAL COLUMN by Phyllis Lowery Sorry I missed writing a columnn last week but the one thing I have learned that as you get older, you can't count on the flesh belng willing to do everytbing that you would like to do, sometimes I forget and get too busy and nature just says whoa down. This Sunday was a beauti- fui day, sunny and mild, not too breezy and there was a good attendance at Church, it was the Tenth Sunday In Creation and "Remembrance Observance". As we sat wait- ing for the Service to begin I read the Meditation printed in the bulletin and since this is the week we observe Remembrance of aIl who served their country in both wars I would like to quote what was written by a man who survived a Nazi prison. "irst they arrested the Conirunists--but I was not a Communist, so I did nothing. Then they came for the Social Democrats but I was not a Social Democrat, so I did nothing. Then they arrested the T7rade-Unionists-but I did nothing, I was not one of them. And they came for the Jews and Catholics, but I was neither a Jew or Catholic and I did nothing. At last they came and arrested me--and there was no one left to do anything about it". The Service opened with the choir singing, "Shepherd 0f Love", Rev. Black wel- comed everyone and while the Christ Candle was being lit Prayers were- expressed for the recovery of Joan .Anderson, a member of our choir and Kendal United. We hope that she will soon be back among us, Joan suffered head injuries when she had a faîl from her horse. The Gathering Hymns were, "What A Mighty God We Serve", "We Cannot Think 0f Them As Dead", and "Onward Christian Soldiers". The Affirmation of Faith was said. The choir sang, "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow. The chîldren were called: forward. David explained why he was wearing the gold Stole. Gold is thought of as purified white, it is womn at Easter and to honour the Saints. He said he chose to wear it this Sunday to Honour those who stood up and fought and gave their lives for their beliefs. The children sang "The Lord Is Good To Me", The hymn "Standing -On The Promises" was sung, the Prayer of Approach and Self- Examination were repeated and the Words of Mssurance given. The Scripture was tîtled 'The Price of Freedom". -I can not begin to write everything that David said to us, I was too busy listening to try and write it in my own words, so I will put down what I got from the Sermon. The Price of Freedom is, Perpètual Vigilance. Remember the past, give thanks for those who fought to keep Canada free. Remember they lived and died to ensure we had the right to live in Peace and Freedom. Let us remember that we all must face the enemy today. The enemy is greed, taking away anothers human digni- ty, apathy, there are many others. There are stili actual wars being fought in other lands, here at home the war is fighting evil, ignorance, pover- ty. As was said in the poem In Flanders Field, "to you, from failing hands we throw, the torch, be yours to hold it high". We face so many thiings that threaten freedom and peace. We have been left a country where we- each have the right to have our own beliefs and opinions, we can openly discuss them with each we may end up still not agreeing but at least we can see the others point of view. What can we do to make sure that the Price of Freedom is not too hîgh? Make the best decisions we can, live the way God wants us too. The hymn, "When Voices Are Confusing" was sung the Prayer ofThlankfulness given. The children joined us for a Remembrance Service. "O Canada" was sung followed by The Last Post, two minutes Silence and Reveille. The Prayer 0f Concern and Commitment given., The clos- ing Hymn was "Lord 0f Light". Speaklng of The Remembrance Service I couldn't help but watch the children - they stood so silently and were 50 solemrn. I wonder what was going through their minds, I know what was golng through mine, memories of young boys I went to school with, who had high hopes for the future and neyer came back to see it, or came back forev- er changed by what they saw. The fathers who raised my generation who came back missing îimbs, loss of sight, a racking cough. Then the boys we knew left to fight for peace and glory. The young men who went to Korea to fight for what they believed in, until recently they weren't even recognized as Veterans, but ~t4a'~ C9~ï&ye ........The Staff of Clarke High School invites you to the Academic Awards Presentation Wednesday, November 19, 1997 Clarke High Sehool Cafeteria at 7:00 p.m. A reception willfollow presentations.
