Ooflo Weekly Times es, Wednesdlay, December 3, 1997-3 'Flash-Back!', It aIl happened a couple of weeks ago when attending an Oak Ridge Moraine Trail meeting at the Ganaraska Forest Centre. A Flash-Back of almost fifty years. The meeting was not that well attended but as niow that befits my bearing I took a cbair somewbat close to the speaker so as not to miss too mucb, on the proposed trail expected to come tbrough our Moraine area. A couple sat to the rigbt with a furtber two standing and a row of five men seated at the back of the small room. The organizationai plan for extending the trail through the Moraine was outlined by tbe speaker. This required the formnation of a Trail Chapter with at least five to six people to get the bail rolling. Those five to six bodies just were not there. not at least from tbis area. During the discussion a voice from the back row asked, Is there anyone bere from Orono". Witbout looking around I put up my hand. "You should ask Roy Forrester if he wouid be interest in helping out on the trail. He bas an interested in the environ- ment". I was taken back some hearing my name but did state, I am Roy Forrester". 1The Roy Forrester who with Carman Comish buîit a sailboat in the barn behind the printing office?" -Yes the same Forrester." Turning around I bad to ask "Wbo are you?" "David Pbasey." came the reply. "I baven't forgotten tbose days nor the sailboat". David, tben a young kid, was part of tbe- building, project. He spent many bours after scbool and into tbe evenings puttering around and keeping tbings in order. As 1 recaîl I did enjoy his presence. As tbe project advanced we did agree that David would be part of tbe initial launcli and maiden sail. The boat was a 11.5 foot cat sail boat in whicb two could squeeze into leaving some room for decking at the bow. It was a project tbat went on for months. But with tbe last brass screw driven into place with the amazing ratchet screw driver, the piywood weil sanded and the last coat of vamnish applied it was time for the iauncb. With the boat, mast, sali on top of the car it was off to Bowmanviile Harbour for David and 1. No doubt 1 was question- ed if 1 could sail ths boat. I did bave lots of con- fidence having been part of a crew of six wbo with a real British Captain used to sheet-up a 'sailing cutter' venturing out from Corn- wallis and often reaching the waters of tbe Bay of Fundy. It would be a snap. And so it was. David and i soon had the boat ail rigged up in the Bowmanvîlie harbour and had set course due south through the two BIG BROTHERS 0F CLARINGTON Dear Editor: On behaif of the Big Brothers of Clarington, I wish to thank everyone wbo helped make the 2Oth Anniversary Celebration a success and everyone who bas supported our agency throughout the years. It was David's first yen- ture in a sailboat and be was being rather quiet as the boat beeied and eut tbrough the water. Tacking off to the west the wind gained in force and off David and I went for a speedy sail down the shoreline. Infact the front of the boat was being pushed down into the water to a point that water rusbed over the bow drencbing David and into the bottom of the boat. 1 did get the boat into the wind but in the mean time ail I could hear from David was "Get me out of here, get me out of here." It was a cautious retumn to tbe protection of the barbour. My pas senger and first mate was not impressed at ail. I later found that my home-made mainsail of factory cotton was pocketing the air so as to drive the bow of the boat down into tbe water. A redesign was made whicb did work some better. David told me last week that lie will not forget the sailing incident, had neyer sailed since and neyer would. David, now a family man of many years and an outdoorsman lives nortb of Brighiton. David also reminded me of the great pleasure bis grandfather, Charlie Woods, had in barnessing up tbe Forrester horse and taking off witb tbe cutter. Cbarlie always had bis buddy Anse Gilroy along witb him. "You don't know bow mucli those two men enjoyed that", said David. Meeting up witb David made for a good niglit and 1 did enjoy the 'Flash Back' in time and tbat even that David remembered. mý 10 0
