Prisoner escapes On December 15, 1997, at 4:30 p.mn. a prisoner escaped fromi the security area of the Provincial Court located at 242 King St. E. Oshawa. A prisoner hiad been in court on Monday for his pre- liminary hearing in relation to robbery charges. At the day's end, while prisoners were being transferred from- the cells to the paddy wagon for transport to Witby Jail, the prisoner attacked one Special Constable, assaulted another and escaped through an over- head bay door. The prisoner ran through backyards and was appre- hended by 17 Division Uniform Patrol Officers sev- eirai blocks awýNay from the courthouse on Central Park Blvd. S. Arrested and charged in this incident is 20-year-old James Edward Wells of 1225 Hwy. 7A, Port Perry. He was to appear in Oshawa Court on December 16, for a bail hear- ing relaing to the charges of - escaping lawful custody, assault causing bodily har, assauling two police officers. The two Special Constables and an arresting Police Officer were injured in this incident. They were treated for their injuries at Oshawa General Hospital and released. The accused was also taken to the hospital where lie received a number of stitches for a cut to his hand which lie had injured while climbing over a wire fence.
