National Power Skaters wax 'A & R' National Power Skating Major Tykes waxed A& R Flooring 4-3 Friday night, notching their third straight win over the 'Flooring' team. Orono slipped behind by one early in the game, but tied it up at 9:38 on a quick shot from the slot by Rob Blaker off a corner pass from Matthew Dobson. The 'power skaters' took the lead on the next shift when Brock Dunham skated in alone and scored (7:10) on a shot that found the corner with Noel Snow and Jevon Staples earning assists. Brett Cairns ended the first period with a wicked shot on goal from a centering pass by Brock Dunham. The second period packed 3 goals into 4 minutes of play. At 12:40, Orono jumped up to two when Noel Snow scored assisted by Brett Cairns and Brock Dunham. Bowmanville bounced back and baffled the boys in blue with goals at 11:12 and 9:15 to tie up the match. Flooring Orono rallied -- Rob Blaker flew in on a breakaway and Matthew Dobson rung a post on the rebound. At 6:55 the 'Power Skaters' drew and killed a penalty and tied the score. Five shots on goal during the first two shifts of the third set the tone - the 'Power Skaters' were hungry. At 3:44 Rob Blaker pocketed his sec- ond goal of the game, the game winner assisted by Matthew Dobson and Grace Williamson. Late in the game, rookie goalie Mitchell Harding pre- served the win--blocking a shot from a breakaway. A hustling Brock Dunham responded with a breakaway of his own. On the last shift, Orono finished off the 'Flooring' with a flurry of scoring chances by Rob Blaker, Tommy Meester, Brett Cairns and Matthew Dobson while defencemen Nathan Smith, Jeffery Mulder and Jevon Staples locked up the blueline. Final shots registered: Orono 24, Bowmanville 9. Accessible Design Atoms face strong goaltending The O.M.H.A. Accessible Design Atoms and their Millbrook counterparts came up even at one apiece last Tuesday night. It was a goaltender's duel that saw both sides unable to end the stalemate. Orono and Millbrook came out flying. While Orono had scoring opportunities early on they were denied as the oppos- ing goalie was sharp. It was Millbrook who struck first at 2:58 of the first period. Orono made many good defensive plays in the second and third periods to keep within one but as the clock ticked down things did not look good for the 'Designers'. With twelve sec- onds remaining in the game, Chris Moffat solved the Millbrook goalie scoring unas- sisted to pull even robbing Millbrook of a win. On December 19th the Accessible Design Atoms faced another stingy goalie when they took on Manvers. Manvers was first on the scoreboard going end-to-end then scoring on a rebound at 7:46. Orono had two break- aways by Steve Hicks and Chris Moffat but were stoned by Manvers' goalie. Orono's penalty-killing unit stifled the Manvers offence many times during the first keeping the score close. At 8:40 of the second peri- od, Manvers went up by two. Orono responded by dominat- ing play creating many scoring opportunities. Kyle Cox and Doug Garlick had good chances but were tied up in front of the net and the 'Designers were again denied. Orono goaltender Carl Tardiff robbed Manvers of a goal early on in the third but was beaten at the 3:40 mark to give Manvers a 3 goal lead. Manvers put the game out of reach thirty-five seconds later on a shot from the blueline. Orono could not put one past the hot Manvers goal- tender resulting in a 4-0 shut- out. Armstrong IGA peewees play in Cobourg Tournament Brock Dunham delivers a scor- ing punch for 'Power Skaters.' On Saturday, December 20th, coach Tom Martin, trainer John Shephard and assistant Wayne Kennedy took the IGA House League peewee team to their first tournament in Cobourg. The boys had a fine showing tying the first game 3-3. Goals were scored by Mike Knapp, Kenneth Lake and Will Lofgren. This achievement put the team in high spirits and made for a fun day. It also goes to show this team is up for many other wins! The second game later that day resulted in a 3-1 loss. Kenneth Lake scored in the second period with the assist going to Will Lofgren. Playing short-handed was their downfall and led to the loss. Fine goaltending by Darrell Kennedy and hard work by both defence and offence made for exciting hockey this tournament. The peewees have three games lined up this weekend and a tournament in Newcastle on December 30. Looks like a 'hockey' Christmas break for the team! Merry Christmas and a big thank you from the team to their coaches and manager Susan Beacock! Markham Label Leafs win 3 in a row The return of Kyle Searle to the lineup after a month off with an ankle injury seems to have sparked the Markham Label squad as they reeled off 3 straight victories this week. Monday night had the Orono team playing the Mariposa Lighting in Oakwood where the Leafs skated to an easy 5-1 victory. Tanner Millson led the way as he scored a pair, while Jamie Rowe, Nathan Caruana and Justin Szymczak posted single markers. Lee Allin had 2 assists with Jeff Wright, Mark McAlister, Curt Robinson and Cam James adding single helpers. Leafs over Millbrook The Leafs traveled to Millbrook on Thursday to take on the Stars and returned home with a well earned 4-3 victory. Lee Allin opened the scoring in the game as he blasted a slap shot past the Millbrook goalie from the riglit point, with Matt Barnes assisting. Mill-brook tied the game up late in the first period, but Allin was able to restore the lead in the second as he broke in around the Millbrook goalie who had fall- en down on the play and put the puck into the empty net. Curt Robinson had the only assist on the goal. This goal seemed to wake the Stars up as they responded with 2 goals on their own to take a 3-2 lead to the dressing room at intermission. The Markham Label squad came out in the third to tie the game up after just 8 seconds. Kyle Searle fed Jesse Price a pass creating a 2-on-1 break. Justin Szymczak converted the pass from Price to the tying goal. The Leafs kept pressing and were rewarded for their efforts at the 9:42 mark as Mati Barnes scored the game win- ning goal on a nice passing play from Tanner Millson and Jeff Wright. Jeff Slemon was able to preserve the victory for the Leafs in the late stages of the game making several great saves. Leafs and Flames vying for playoff spot The Leafs Sunday home game saw them taking on the Ops Flames who are battling the Leafs for a playoff spot. Only the top four teams in the loop will make playoffs. Orono opened the scoring in the game on the power play as Curt Robinson took a pass from Kyle Searle in front of the net and made a nice move around the goalie to put it in the open side. The Leafs were able to increase the lead to 2 in the sec- ond period on another power play as Ops were down two players. Curt Robinson fed Lee Allin at the point who in turn ripped a slap shot past the Ops goalie. The Orono penalty killing was put to a real test in the second period as they wore out a path to the penalty box. At one point there were more Leaf players in the penalty box than on the player's bench--but the penalty killing was superb. Jeff Slemon and Josh Brandt were outstanding in net as both made big saves during Ops power-plays. The second period ended with the Markham Label squad holding a 2-0 lead, but the Flames cut that margin in half when they scored early in the third. The Leafs played a strong defensive game from that point on, and were able to get the insurance marker at the 4:31 mark. Jamie Rowe poked the puck past the Ops defence- man at the Orono blue line over to Aaron Robinson who had just stepped out of the penalty box. Robinson skated in all alone to beat the Ops goalie with a nice shot to the low glove side. The Markham Label team will take a one week Christmas break before returing to the ice on December 28, when they travel to Omemee for another league encounter. Builders hand Cobourg loss in nearly penalty-free game The Building Place Orono Bantam Leafs were host to Cobourg's Home hardware in exhibition play here last Thursday night. Orono defeated the Cobourg club 7-5. Orono's Ashely Getz made great save after save however, with only 2:19 left in the period Home Hardware slipped one by her. Orono wasn't long in tying it up when John Halik made a pass to Scott Wood who in turn worked it over to Dan Tresise, who neatly sent it home. (1-1) (no penalties) The second period was goal after goal with Dan Tresise leading the pack scoring 5 of the 7 goals, congratulations! The penalty time was held at zero for this period as well, we tip our hats boys! With 8:52 on the clock, Tresise hit pay dirt with Brad Wood and Scott Wood assist- ing. At 7:21, Rick Howe did some of his fancy, wiggly foot work to skate around some Hardware defense, passing it to Tresise who slipped passed into the clear and flicked it in. As the clock rolled to 7:02, Adam Rypstra made a strong pass to Tresise, with his magic stick, did his job once again and made the score 4-1. Two minutes later, Brad Wood set up Scott Webb, who scored #5 for Orono. Despite many saves by Getz, Hardware found the target: 5-2. Twelve seconds later Scott Wood took the bull by the horns sending the puck over the line with the assist coming from Halik; 6-2. Hardware came back with a quick one. Tresise, with his stick touched by Christmas Magic, received a pass from Webb and Bob Brown and sent in his fifth goal of the game. Home Hardware didn't sit back and with 3:00 left in the second period scored on Orono; 7-4. The third period saw some great plays by the Orono team. Furthermore, there were no penalties on either side until the game was almost over. There were many shots on the Hardware net, however, Orono was scoreless in the third. Home Hardware scored one more bringing the game to a 7- 5 final. Meny Christmas team and keep up the great team work!
