- Orono Weely Times, Wednesday, Jan uary 2 1, 1998 -3 A Christmas Turkey by Roy Forrester Ripley has his "Believe It Or Not" but in Orono, Royal Lee, just says "Believe It" and 1 have back up for the statement he states. A Wild Turkey and ail red. Royal said it was hard to believe but both he and his fniend made no doubt of the colour red. "I phoned the biologist with the Ministry of Natural Re-sources ti Peterborough" states Royal, and he said, "I have neyer heard of a red wild turkey." It may be hard to believe but coming from Royal 1 wouid have to suggest "believe it". 1 dared not ask the loca- tion of the red turkey after seeing what can happen when a rarity in birds are made public. There is no peace for the featured crea- ture nor for people who may live nearby. The sighting and reporting of a Hawk Owl east of Orono on the Fifth Line years ago was a good exam- pie of just how far birders wil come to see a rare specie. That rarity attracted birders from as far west as Sarnia and well i the State of New York. A littie more on the sane side Royal also reported a flock of Redpoles at his feed- ers. The Redpole is rather a cute littie bird with its flush, of red for the maie on the chest, a red cap and a black chin spot. The female is strongly striped on the sides. Your writer made a sight- ing of Redpoles alongside the FiftIi Line Road west of the former Sales Barr. They were busy flyng about land- ing on the long grasses for seeds. A busy group they were taking to flighit and again landing for another feeding. The Redpole is a winter resident of the area having spent the summer i the Arctic. The Cedar Waxwings are in their winter mood and as vagabonds are flying about in flocks. A flock of at ieast eighty were sighted on the south side of the Sixth Line north- east of Orono. They were feeding on fruit fromn a number of Buckthomn trees. Buckthomn is an intro- duced tree specie to North America and does spread quickiy in untiiled lands. Up to this point we have not heard of an abundanice of birds at feeders thîs year. There is however regular in and out air-flight of Chick-adees and Nuthatch at the Ganaraska Forest Centre where a couple of feeders are kept replenished wîth bird seed. It is an attraction for the young students staying over at the Centre. But ail the birds tin the forest don't make way to the Centre in winter. Skiing the Yeilow trail twice on the week-end and somnewhat far from the Centre we came in contact with Chickadees and Rose- Breasted Nuthatch search- inig bark cavities for insects and insect eggs. Life does go on 365 days of the year.
