Leafs over Beaverton Blades The. game at home Friday night versus the Beaverton Blades saw the Leafs cruise to an 8-1 victory. Curt Robinson led the way witb a goal and 2 assists while Lee Allun'bad a pair of markers and Jesse Price, Nathan Caruana, Kyle Searle, Matt Ramnes and, Mark McAlister contributed single markers. Tanner Milîson had a pair of helpers with Justin Szymczak, Jamie Rowe and Jeff Wright adding single helpers. Shutout 4-0 by:Newcastle 1The Leafs travelled down the 115 Saturday to Newcastle in what could prove to be a pre- view of the upcoming playoffs. Orono played' this game short- handed as the result of a couple of player suspensions and an injury. They pflayed valiantly losing 4-0 in a penalty filled contest. Newcastle scored- the only goal in the fîrst period and put the game away withthree more in the second. This was a chippy affair. Both teams con- tributed to 70 minutes in penal- ties and the game was curfewed witb over 9 minutes remaining in the third period. The Markhamn Label squad will have to pick up their game if they hope to defeat Newcastle in the playoffs. Hard-fough t 3-2 victory The Leafs finished off their league schedul e at home on Sunday against.the Mariposa Lightning with a hard-fought 3- 2 victory. Jamie Rowe opened the scoring for the Leafs when he banged in a rebound from a Nathan Caruana shot. Chris Kirkbride also assisted on the goal. Mariposa managed to get the equalizer late in the first period on a booming slap shot that eluded goaltender Jeff Slemon. The secondperiod saw the Markham Label team out chance the Lightning but were, unable to find thie back of the Mariposa net. They remained knotted ai one apiece until Mariposa with a 2-man advan- tage in the third managed to score the go-ahead goal during a scramble in front of Orono's net. Nathan Caruana tied it up again on a power play when he slid one beneath the Mariposa neiminder. Jamie Rowe and Chris Kirkbride assisted on the equalizer. The Leafs scored the gamne winner, when Lee Aluin hustled into the Lighining end out- muscling the defender and gaining possession of the puck then passing it out front to Jamie Rowe who banged it home for his second of the game. The Leafs finished the regu- lar season 17-12-3 and could possibly face Newcastle in the opening game of playoffs. The team is off to Bobcaygeon January 31 for iheir 3rd tourna- ment this season and begin playoffs the following week. Family Auto run ners-up in Brighton The Family Auto Rep Bantam team) played .500 hock- ey the past week with two wins and two losses. They had a con- vincing 6-0 win against Sunderland in Orono last Wednesday and in a toumnament in Brighton suffered a 4-1 loss to Mariposa, won 4-2 against the host l3righiton team and were struick with a 2-1 loss to London Lighlting in thie 'B' championshiip final. Family Auto over Sunderland In Orono Wednesday, the bantami Leafs took a Î-0 firsi period lead against Sunderland. Tyler Robinson scored fromn Reid and Shietler, Ryan Tresise from call-uip Derek Heerschiop and Parry and finally Andrew Beacock fromi call-up Dan Tresise. Bothi teams played a scoreless second period with a total of 5 shiots on goal. Orono picked up the pace in the thiird scoring three unan- swered goals. Marksmnen wvere call-up Lee Allin from Shetler, Allin again fromn Parry and Shietler and finally Tyler Robinson from Parry and Bouley. FilI-in netminder Ryan Leddy earned the shiutout. The call-ups for this game did an admirable job filling infor the 8 reguilars out of the linieup for suspensionis, injuries, etc'. Brighton tournament Family Auto played with a full bench this toumnament with the exception of Rob 1Thomlpsoni who's ouit withi a 2nd broken collar bonie. Oronio faced leaguie nemiesîs Mariposa first playingo a tighit scoreless first period. Mariposa capital- ized on two Oronio penalties addinig a third goal in period two. Oronio came back scoring their own power-play goal early i the tird but Mariposa blasted another past nietmninder Scott Poole then closed the door to any fuirther Orono offense. Scoring Oronio's lone, goal was Ryan Tresise from Witheridge and Tollett . Game two versus hiosi team Brighton, Orono camne out fly- ing defeating themn hanidily 8-1. The Leafs wenl ahiead by two early. Ryan Leddy from Reid and MeManuts--thie second by Greg Bester from Reid -and Leddy. Brightoni played a much stronger seconid period as the two teamis traded goals. Oronio snliper was Bob Witheridge unassisted. Brighiton and Orono scored one-apiece in the third. Bob Withieridige with hiis sec- ond of thie gamne from Ryan Tresise. Scott Poole played a strong gamne in net , Thewn advanced Orono to the 'B' Chamnpionshiips. Orono faced off against London Lightning and hot goal- tending in gamne three. In the opening framec, London scored first but Orono responded with an unassisted power-play goal by Bob Witheridge. Both teamis played a strong second period with London picking up the lone goal going ahead 2-1. In the third, Orono made a valiant effort to get back into it but was unable to put one by London's hot goalie despite signîficantly outplaying and ouishooting them. Ali-in-alI the toumnament was a good pre-playoff tuneup. Captain Jamie Parry accepted the 'B' runner-up trophy on behaîf of the team while Ryan Tresise won the tearn MVP award. There were no suspen- sions Ibis wveekend but Craig McManus wNas forced to leave, the game early after aggravat- ing a back injury. Accessible Design Atoms defeat NAISC Selects On January 23, the Orono Accessible Design Atoms played an exhibition game against the, N.A.S.C. Sélects. Orono appeared ready to go right off the first face-off and proved It by opening the scor- ing just 46 seconds into the game. Kyle Allin got the goal. assisted by Steve Hicks. Orono went up 2-C) at 2:39 of the flrst as Doug Garllck scored assisted by Paul Richiter. The selects pulled within one before the end of the period. Orono's third goal of the gamne came from Kýyle Cox assisted by Chris Moffat and Ryan Campney. The selects again pulled'within a goal late in the second, but Orono thwarted any chance of a comeback with strong defensive playand another goal as Doug Garlick scored, bis second of the game from Kyle Cox. Final score; 4-2 in favour of Orono. Scott Wood Bret National Power Skating over 1 st_ placeRotary club The National Power Skating Major Tykes took care of busi- ness last Saturday afiernoon with an action-packed 4-2 win over firsi place Rotary Club. Coach Blaker juggled the line- up and his team responded with an incredible effort. The defense allowed a slingy six shots on their netminder Tanner Johnson while the offense was allowed 16 shots against a very talented Rotary squad! The 'power skaters' clicked early at 13:40 of the first when speedy winger Tommy Meester scored on a quick shot in front from a Matthew Dobson offer- ing. Bowmanville tied the game at 4:30 and the period ended even at 1. 1A smokin' Rob Blaker notched Orono's second goal at 10:56 of the second from Tommiy Meester with Orono jumping ahead 2-1. Bowmanville tied the game at 14:33 of the third, but Orono just kept on rollin'. The next shift, Brett Cairns hustled to another breakout firing a high shot thai forced a iough save. At 7:06 Rob Blaker scored his second of the game--the game winner spinning a round and shapping in a wrist shot from 15 feet out afler being set up by Cairns. The 'power skaters' insurance goal camne with 3:09 lefi in the game when defense- man Jevon Siaples pinched from the blueline--firing a shot into the crease area. It was Alex Campney who scored by deflecting the puck under the Rotary goalie's pads into the net giving 'National Power Skating' a decisive viciory over the first place Rotary Club team. Bri-ann wins gold in Ops Bri-ann Collier, an Orono skate r, won a gold medal in a skating competition on 4' ~ Saiurday January 1 Oih. Bni- ann, was the only Orono skater to win a medal at the Can- skate competition in Ops.
