Orono Wee-kly Tïmes. Wednesday, Febmuaiy 11, 199 The passenger lift at Orono United Church was officially opened and dedicated on Sunday, February th afler thie momlnrg service. Mayor Diane Hanire, Councllor Charlie Trini, the archltect David Mils, the foreman for Gerr Construction, Peter Gerrits, were present. The ribbon was eut by Mvrs. Jean Staples from her wheelchair. So the first stage of a serles of improvements to the building ha.,; been brought to a safe con- clusion by the Wheelchalr Access Comniinttee, chaired by Klaas Schoenmaker. The lift can be accessed from the driveway off Park Street. Persons can walk or wheel into the new glass fronted lobby and then onto the lift which wfi take them either to the level of the sanctuary or the main hall. This lift is key operated and, therefore, passengers must be accompanied by someone trained in the operational procedures. There will be a comn- munications systen instalIled at the Park Street entrance con- nectlng with the main entrance of the church, the lift entrance In the sanctuary and the church office so that persons want- ing tQ use the lift, can suimmon someone to operate it. An usher will be available each Sunday to provide this service. A washroom at the far end of the lowver Chistian Education Hall has been altered so as to be wheelchair accessible. This is considered a temporary provision because the second stage of the improvements will be the building of new purpose built washrooms, opposite the entrance to the Uit on the level of the main hall. Orono United Church is very pleased and proud to be able to serve its congregation and community in this improved manner. They urge anyone who feels they could benefit from the use of the lift to notilI the ushers on Sunday, telephone the church office in advance on weekdays, or simpîy use the itetr-comm at the Park Street entrance. Even thougl tliere lias been some brisk days over tlie past couple of weeks there is stili a hit of sprlng wlien tlie sun does corne out. It is especlally s0 if you can find a well protected alcove and covered wtli the full rays of tlie sun. True or not it does liave the birds mnoving and tliose tliat liave been absent for weeks are returning to tlir haunts and to the feeders in tlie comimunlty. Tliere lias been no startllng reports but our front feeder of niger seed can account, at times, a ful count of American Goldfincli for the elght perches plus 50 to 75 on the grounid. A few Common Redpoles as well as a couple of House Finch have also been present. A Hairy Woodpecker remembered there was a bal of suet and dropped in for a treat. Perliaps lie or she will bnlng a few frlends in the future. A single Dove stili drops in for a nlp of the chicken scratch. A newly designed backyvard feeder along witli the neighbours feeder lias seen a host of Chickadees and Rose-breasted Nuthiatcli Oronio to tute Rock and back again There no doubt is som-e sort of story on just how the below letter to the cdi- tor, written in Orono by an local resident, appeared in the Downhomer Magazine, December issue, New- fouindland, and then came to liglit on, the counter at Dulees, Orono. What goes around, cones around. Dear sir: Years ago, m-y husband was a former nursery Superintendent, for wliat was then known as the Ontario Department of Lands and Forest. Coming in fromn the out- doors one .mori--ing, I was miet by our three-year-old who was very excited because she haid answered thfe telephione anid taken a message. She said and 1 quote, "you're posed to cal the lone ranger at the north pole." She was deadly sert- ous and wanted me to return the cail jimmedlately. Trying to keep a straiglit face, I explained 1 had to put a load in the washer and headed for the base- ment. Shortly, the phone rang agata and 1 answered. A maie voice'ýsaid, "This is the chief ranger at North Bay". Mary Buntiag. Oronio, Ontario coming out'of the woods. They sure make for a lot of hussie and bussie. Over the past three weekends I've been out at the Ganaraska Forest Centre partaking in some Cross Country skllng. 0f course l'in down to the shorter Yellow trail, some 4.2 kilometers. If conditions are good its an hour trip over somre interesting terrain. While at the Centre It is an opportunity to check their bird feeder. Last week eight Blue Jays flew out from the bushes while the week previous it was a considerable number of Chickadees. The Chickadees seem quite tame and may well eat out of your liand. That's it for birds but I can report the slghtlng of a fox on one of the trips to the Forest Centre. It was on Concession Road 6 just before Jewell Road.. It was feasting on a road-kllled skunk Just off the travelled surface of the road. It was oblivious to our presence as we passed on the opposite lane. SUili there wlien we went over the brow, of the hili. l'mn certainly enijoying the winter and would hate to midss the outings in the crisp area and the beauty of the forest. 89, 2) May Tabb -81, 3) Bernice Partner - 79, 4) Lavina Downes - 75, 5) Charles Stapleton - 75, Clara Meuleman - 75; Lowv - Marion Sears; Draws - Shirley Bubar,Charles Campbell, Walter Murphy, May Tabb, Lorna Crockett, Roy Hayward, Paul Mucha.
