First round of Q.M.H.A. playoffs Orono Bantams elimincite Minden .... .. .. 5* * Bae., The Family Auto bantams closed out the first round of their playoffs Friday night in Minden with an 8-2 victory. It took only two games to end the series and set the stage for Orono to meet up with Ops who, te our surprise, had elimi- nated Fenelon Falls also in two gamnes. Ops is a much improved team from the one Orono defeated 8-3 and 5-0 earlier in the season. It took a third peri- od rally for Orono to finally shut the door on Ops with a 7-4 victory and take a one gamne lead in the best of 5 games, six- point series. In Minden Friday, the ban- tams started slowly closing out the first period deadlocked at 1. Matt Reid scored Orono's first goal with Ryan Leddy and Craig McManus assisting. Orono opened things Up in the second scoring three times before Minden replied with one, of their own--still behind 4-2. Orono marksmen were Greg Shetler assisted by Jeff Thompson and Tyler Robinson; Andrew Beacock with assists to Bob Witheridge and Ryan Tresise; and Shetier withi his second goal of the gamne unas- sisted. Penalties and a lack of skaters was the difference for Minden in the third as Orono outshot their opposition 15-5. Orono tallies in thie third went to Jamie Parry from Withieridge; Tyler Robinson from Reid, Bob Witheridge fromn Tresise and Beacock and finally Beacock with his second of the game from Witheridge and Tresise. Goaltender Chris Burritt, back from a lengthy, nagging, knee injury was back between the pipes eamning the Win. Orono 7-4 oveir Ops The first game of round two of the preliminary O.M.H.A. playoffs against Ops was dloser than the 7-4 score indicates! Ops struck first at 9:09 of the opening period and the battle was on. Andrew Beacock didn't wait long to tie it up at 8.26 fromn Witheridge and Tresise. The teams traded goals twice in the second period --but Orono got last say scoring the go-ahead marker late in the period to take a 4-3 lead. Snipers in the second were Greg Shetler fr om Jeff Thompson and Tyler Robinson at 12:50. Ryan Tresise scored from Andrew Beacock and Bob Witheridge at 11:49. The last Accessible Design Atoms put up good fi'-ght but surrender to Minden The Orono Accessible Design Atoms were unfortu- nate in their bid to take their playoffs to a highier level as they were beat oui two straight by Minden in the first round of playoffs. Orono played good hockey but j ust coulidn't get by the toughi Minden squad. Gaine one was played Tuesday nlight In Minden. The opposition scored early in the game to take a 1 -0 Iead. It was a fast gamne--exciting to watch. Both teamis served tripping minorsonly 34 seconds apart but Orono's Chris Moffat was able to tie it ati1 with Paul Richiter setting it up. Minden went up 2-1 early in the second but Orono tied it again at 5:00 in the second. doug Garlick had the goal from Moffat and Kyle Cox. Both teamis had great chances in the third but neither teamn could put the gamne away so--into over- time they went tied at 2. The 'designers' camne out strong In OT and hiad miany opportunities to score but it was Minden who won the sudden Victory over- timie period taking the first game of the short series. Accessible Design couild flot capitalize on the mnany scoring opportunifies they had early on in the game. Goaltender Jamije Whitehead made biis share of great saves to keep the opposi- tion off the scoreboard but Minden went ahiead by one early in the second when Orono was a hatle sloppy i their own end. Evan Moore tied the game at one at 3:25 on an unassisted goal. Carl Tardiff traded places in goal and hie also made Somle dazzling saves but Minden went up 2-1 early in the third. O.rono had to be sharp late in the period as Minden kept putting pressure on themn. Orono took a timne-out late in the period to get back to their garue plain. Orono pulled thieir goalie for an extra attacker but* couldn't beat their goaltender. Minden scored an empty-netter with 20 seconds lefi to win the gaine 3-1 and take the series two gamnes straight eliminating Orono fromi further playoff action. Congratulations to ail play- ers and coaches whoe put for-th their best efforts aIl season long to play the gamie. goal at 1:02 of the second was scQred when Bob Witheridge on a Greg Bester pass, one-timed it--but Greg Shetler was right there ready to pick up the big rebound and neatly put it away. Orono spent much time killing off a barrage of penalties in the third period but stili outscored their opponents 3-1 enroute to 7-4 win. At 5:13 of the third Jeff Thompson scored on a rebound from Greg Shetier. Ops responded with a goal at 4:47 making it 5-4. Orono furthered their lead at 2:20 when Bob Witheridge coming from behind the net found a tiny lit- tie opening left by the Ops goalie (not guarding bis post closely enough) and scored on a neat little wrap-around. Tresise and Bester earned the assists., At 1:50 Family Auto put the gamne away. .With pin- point passing fromn Witheridge and Bester, Andrew Beacock scored the final goal of the game giving Orono a 1-game Iead. Game 2 at Ops will be February 12 at 7:15 p.m. then back home again on Friday at 9:00 p.m. Three of Family Auto's big guns scored five of seven goals totalling 12 points between them during last Sunday night's O.M.H.A. playoff game against Ops. National Power Skaters win shoot-out The National Power Skating major tykes won a 8-5 shoot- out withCIBC in exhibition play last Friday night. Rob Blaker notched 4l goals, Matthew Dobson scored 3 and Tommy Meester 1 in an end-to- end exciting game. Picking up assists was Meester with 3, Brett Cairns and Jevon Staples each with a pair and Nathan Smith and Rob Blaker added single markers. Finals shots on goal were Orono 14 - Bowmanville 7. At 14:05 Rob Blaker picked up a Mattbew Dobson pass and scored fromn the circle. Bowmanville came back with two goals on the next shift. At 4:13 Matthew Dobson put Orono ahead 'with another high shot. Meester again drew the assist. Withi only 3 seconds left in the first Noel Snow popped in another goal on a breakaway from Brock Dunham and Jevon Staples.
