Series tied at one ,Witheridge scores OT winner e. * e *. - Orono's Family Auto ban- tams suffered a heartbreaking 6-5 overtime loss in game one of their OMHA quarter-final championship round against the host Port Carling team last Friday night. They faced a sim- ilar fate in Orono Sunday when the third period ended in a 3-al tie. Tbis time however, it was Orono who claimed the 4-3 sudden victory overtime win. Game one overtime Ioss In Port Carling Friday night, a slow start was expected from Orono after a two week layoff. Neyer in their wildest dreams did they expect to be down 4-0 midway through the first. Most everyone feit the boy's fate had already been decided. But, tbey forgot to tell the boys that! Five minutes into the second period, Jeff Thompson got the team on track scoring the first Orono goal with linemate Andrew Beacock assisting. Port Carling quickly responded adding their fifth goal putting a damper on any hopes the Leafs may have had. Beacock struck for one late in the period to revive a faint hope. The bantams came up with a HUGE third period, blasting three unanswered goals to tie the game at 5. Scoring for the Leafs were Bob Witheridge from Chris Bouley and Andrew Beacock with 2--earning bim- self a hat-trick. Rob Thompson and Greg Bester picked up the assists. This set the stage for a sud- dien victorv. ten minute over- t' ti tu fi get the puck out of their own end. At 7:17 of the overtime period, Port Carling found the mark winning the game 6-5 to dlaim'bragging nîghts. Orono goaltender Chnis Burnitt played a fine game kick- ing out 28 shots compared his counterpart's 14. Game two overtime win! There was excitement in the air Sunday night wben a large hometown fan contingent filîed the Orono Arena seeking revenge for a road game loss Fniday. Expectations were high as the Family Auto bantams took to the ice but it was deja vu all over again. The Leafs struggled in the opening period finding tbemselves witb a two goal deficit. Tbings tightened up in the second period. Then, at 1:44 when Port Carling~s goalie went down, Tyler Robinson went up--hitting the mesb cutting Port's lead to one. Andrew Beacock and Jon Whitehead picked up assists on the play. Port Carling regained their two-goal lead at 12:42 of the third but Orono replied two minutes later with 'Big' Bob Witheridge finding pay dirt from winger Greg Bester mak- ing it 3-2. There were pats on the back and high fives all around when Orono sharp- shooter Andrew Beacock tied the game at 3 with 7:24 remain- ing on the dlock. The fans went wild! Greg Shetier and Bob Witheridge garnered the assists. Again, the stage was set for bled as pressure mounted and was unable to clear the puck from their zone. In fact TWICE, within a couple of minutes, the Port almost scored on their own netminder! With 3:15 5 eft in overtime, man of the hour Bob Witberidge rushed up the ice, waited for the goalie to make his move down, then neatly put it on the shelf! The bometown crowd erupted with cheers and whis- tles--and yes, the air horns were blowing full force as the play- ens congratulating tbemselves, collapsed in a pile on the ice! Wbat a game! Set-up men for the game winner were Greg Shetler and Captain Andrew Parry. Once again, Family Auto had stellar netminding--this time from Scott Poole who faced 26 shots to Port Carling's 17. Orono met Sunderland on Feb. 27 and skated to a 4-0 wln. Shane Winters recelved the shut-out with a great, effort. Darcy Mitchell opened the scoring unassisted. Andrew Fothergili scored the second unassisted. Adam Wood scored the third assisted by Mad Dog Beenen and Darcy Mitchell. The Beenen- Mitchell-Wood line connect- ed, again to score the fourth. Mad Dog jammed home a rebound. On March 1, Orono trav- elled to Fenelon Falls. They jumped into a 2-0 lead but Fenelon wouldnt give up and tied the gamé late in the third period. Orono's goals were scored by Darcy Mitchell assisted by Brandon Ernst and Ryan Knox. Cam Delorme fought off a defense- man with a great second effort to score the second. Doug Deboo picked up the assist. The defense partners Ernst, Reilly, Donnelly, Knox & Moffat were solid on the blue-line.
