Seniors being targeted in purse snatchings The Durham Regional Police Service is advising seniors to be more careful while shopping, after a rash of purse snatchings at grocery stores in Oshawa. Over the past 10 days, fourteen thefts of ladies wal- lets have been reported to police all occurring in large grocery stores along the high- way #2 corridor in Oshawa. Three purse snatchings were also reported in Bowmanville grocery stores last week. Most of the victims remember being approached by a female 30 to 50 years of age and being asked to check prices of certain food items on the shelves. While the victim is looking at the shelf prîce, the suspect quîckly removes the victim's wallet from the victim's bag, whîch is usually open and in easy reach, sitting on the child seat of the shopping cart. The theft is not discovered until the victim reaches the check- out and discovers her wallet missing from her bag. Twenty-seven year old Kevin Warren of Whitby, and twenty-seven year old Pamela Reid of Oshawa were apprehended in Whitby on March 13, when they tried to cash a cheque from one of the stolen wallets. Police advise female shop- pers and in particular seniors, to keep their shoulder purses or bags zipped closed at all times and always in their sight. Or, place the purse in the bottom of the shopping cart and place the groceries on top of the purse. This way, the purse is secure until you empty the cart at the check-out. Anyone with information on these incidents is asked to contact the Durham Regional Police Service at (905) 579- 1'520 or Crime Stoppers at (905) 436 TIPS. Volume 62, Number 11, Happenings.
