Orono BIA is anxious to save old from becomning landfill. The Orono Business Del Improvemrent Association isi (BIA) discussed the subject of Coi improved street lighting in the cil downtown core at their month- casý ly meceting last week the Wednesday. The Bownaniville hap BIA will soon be taking down wai their old street liglts and cas replacing them with new ones. It was decided at the Orono in t. BIA that those old of : Bowmaniville liglits would of 1 enhance our downtown core. be The subject of the new tha garbage cans for the downtown par] core was again discussed. The fini model the Municipal Works FRQ0'M PARLIAMENT HILL Alex Shepherd Last week a constituent called my office and asked, "How corne you demand to hand out flags at parades but thii vote against the display of 1 flags on members' desks in pa: the House of Commnons?" Coi That's a fair question and of( it desexi'es an answer. der Since 1 started represent- are ing Durham n October of '931 I have womn a Canadian flag FiE lapel pin. In the last pIE Parliainent 1 sponsored a Bill Col called Flag Day to recognize the February l5th as the isr aniversany of the Canadian allc tlag as well as to provide for a on national holiday for 1 Canadians. Only the first part the was realized but it is It progress. to The promotion of our hot national symbols are some- str 1 Bowmanville street liglits -partment is offered the BIA flot the one they ordered. uncillor John Mutton, coun- liaison to the BIA, is on the se. Mutton said "I will tell mn that Orono will flot be ,py tili they get what they nt--the cadillac of garbage 's.9, The lack of parking spaces the village was also a matter some discussion. A parcel land behind the CIBC, could converted into a parking lot .t would accommodate 60 king spaces. The BIA will rther explore this possibility. ing I take very seriously. The differente between trades and the House of mrmons is that the bouse cornmoris s not a place for ,nonstrations and parades First, two large Canadian ags are prominently dis- ayed in the House of )mmons on either side of eSpeaker. Secondly there rio known legislature that [ows for symbolic dispîays their desks. T'he bouse of Commons is e lghest court in the land. would not be appropriate go down to the local court- )use and conduct demon- rations while the court Is in session. Why would you do it in Parliarnient? There Is also the question of free speech. 'he House of Commons is the epitome of freedom of expression. This voice is given to MPs by a free electorate. Since 1 arn entrusted with this voice by the people of Durham 1 arn under the obli- gation to respect the voice of other MPs even though 1, and the people of Durham, may vehemently oppose' other MPs' views. This whole thing started by temporarily denylng a mnem- ber the freedom to speak. Canadians wanted to take exception to remnarks made' by a Bloc Quebecois member, in the House of Commons that there were too many flags at the Japan Olympics. After we sang "0 Canada" and then waved the flags most MPs were prepared to go back to work.,Ail of a sud- den the Reform Party selzed on the opportunity to glet some cheap press clips which 1 saw as denigrating the Canadian flag for their parti- san political gain. 1 also do not pander to the separatists. But 1 do not want them going back to Quebec and saying to French Canadians, "I told you that we could not have a voice in Ottawa, they don't respect our rlght to free speech." The separatistS are propa- ganda specialists. do we want to be so stupid and give themn an, issue to use in Quebec?1 And if you allow one flag on an MPs desk, then you raise the possibility of allow- ing others. Som-e opposition mnembers didn't see anything wrong with having their provincial flagsin Parliarnent. 1 don't want to sit in the Commons with a bunch of Quebec flags strewn about. It really bothers me that while this is going on Bouchard is wondering through the northern U.S. stating how Quebec is that country's greatest friend and trading pantner. It's another' attempt by the separatists to reinvent the world to serve their purposes. The fact that 1 cani respect and even defend, the sepa- ratista right to free speech is dlean evidence that our feder- alist goverument lias protect- ed the French language in North America. Many of the francophones who left for the Northern U. S, have lost their language and identity, asslm- ilated into the great Arnerican melItlng pot. The reality is the we are the greatest friends and traders with Canadians in Quebec. And their greatest defenders. That is why Canada will survive as a strongly unlted nation because we have put the energy into understanding each other and creating last- Ing bonds. I hope I have answered the question of why wavlng flags ln the House of Commons and parades are two different things to me and must be two different things. But I can understand, wlth aIl the charades going on there lately, how the public has difficulty understanding my position. JOHIN DEERE SALES & SERVICE &Now offeing...
