Oronio Weekly 'imes. Wednesday, Apnii 8, 19q98 - 3 WHIT RONLYAE SPARROWS PREDOMINATE Over the week-end it was Sparrows daat predomhaated as far -as our sightings were concerned. Conng out of the>house Sunday rnorning it was th e sang of the White Crowned Sparrow siniging frorn the high Spruce tree ha dae back- yard. I did get da:-e bhaoculars on a couple who were on their way a little to the norda of us. Then tripping on the Provincial lands along the Wilrnot Creek 1 crossed over what one right cal Savannah lands ha the area of the old Forestry dunp. Here I slghted anothier tbree species of Sparrows two of which have red caps, the Tree Sparrawi with a black dot on its chest and dae Chipping Sparrow.with a clear chest. In dais area a number of Song Sparrows were also sighted. On the way out of dae for- mer Nursery lands a sang carne frorn a tree near the parking lot. At first 1 said anodaer Sang Sparrow but ha fact dae bird turned out ta, be a Vesper Sparrow with its white outside wing feadaers. Later downtawn a pair of House Sparrows made for the total of seven species. Not bad for a few hours I thought and 1 will return ta the area later ha dae year ta browse about. The area of 900 ta 1000 acres west of the Village does seem popular for walking and hiking with six cars in the parking lot Sunday rnorning and seven in the late after- noon. In speaking to one couple they stated that they were from Caurtice and do corne to Orona quite often for a bike. In speaking to the couple th ey said they heard a lot of ducks ha the wetlands of the property but fail to fhad thern. ia fact, they stated, the sound was being made by frogs. "They sounded just like ducks". It was interestlng that they should mention tbis as Bill Perryman, a regular at Dulee's for a.rn. coffee, spoke of tbis very fact a couple -of days ago. He also stated that he had been faoled by dis ha the past and was quite sur- prised to find out that daey were frogs. - 1 had ta admit that a nurn- ber of years ago I had also been fooled wida the sound of the Spring Peeper frogs in dae Ganaraska. 1 was to get a dloser look for these ducks and travelled up a small wet strearn area. On arriving at the norda end the "duckC" sound was daen coming frorn the. southern portion and likewise when I retreated to the south end, the "duck" sound was at the nortbern end. 1 was beginning to dlue-ha that hadeed it was not ducks but sometbing else. Finally il registered "Springer Peepers". Certainly 1 arn always glad ta hear someane having dae sarne problern and thank Bil Perryrnan and the couple FOR CANCER- The mnass hecad shaving off ail Durhairn Regi onal Police Otfticers involved with the Cops for Cancer campaign, will begin at 9:00 on April 2lst at ail "First Choice Haircutters" locations in the Durham Reg ion. On Sunday we also made our first sighting of a Turkey Vulture. There is no doubt they have been around for sorne Urne. That's il for dais week other than there were a con- siderable number of Rainbow Trout in the Wilmot on Sunday. Many were paired- off over their egg nests assur- ing the continuation of the breed and thepurpose of coming to the Wilmot from the Lake. Some would be a real tus- sie for the rod and reel group. - SPARKY Suddenly , at his home in Orono on Wednesday, April 1, 1998, in his 58th year.
