S 4 Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 22, 1998 M ______________________________ National Power Skating'A' finalists National Power Skating major tykes finished off an incredible hockey season last Saturday afternoon in Bowmanville. The talented young hockey players earned the 'A' finalist title in playoff action as their season drew to a close. This capped a year in which the 'Power Skating' team went undefeated in round-robin play- off action; they were 'A' cham- pions and 'A' finalists in tour- nament play; finished second in their division and--most impor- tantly, had a whole truck-load of fun! Congratulations to all the players! Also, special thanks go to coach Gord 1laker, assistant coach Curt Cairns and trainer Rob Harding for their commit- ment to the team and constant encouragement Many thanks to all the par- ents for their positive support and to our sponsor 'National Power Skating' and Michelle Ernst. The 1997/98 National Power Skating major tykes finished off an incredible season of hockey. Russ Major Plumbing novices bronze medalists in St. Catharines The Russ Major Plumbing OMHA Novice allstars won their last game of the season to bring home the bronze medal from St. Catharines. Orono competed against such teams as Dorchester, Spartan and Stoney Creek in their division. The team played four games over a three-day period. Game one saw the novices defeat Dorchester in a close 2-1 match. Adam Wood opened the scoring assisted by Brandon Ernst. Ernst then scored Orono's second goal with Cam Delorme and Ryan Knox pick- ing up assists Orono was soundly beaten 6-1 in game two by Stoney Creek--must have spent a little too much time in the pool! Adam Wood scored the lone Orono goal with Darcy Mitchell assisting. In the third game, Spartan defeated Orono 3-1. Orono's only goal--described as a "how- itzer" was scored by Ryan Knox unassisted. Game four pitted Orono against Dorchester again whom they had beaten earlier. The Russ Major novices emerged victors after playing a very close 1-0 over-time game. Brandon Ernst scored the game winner assisted by Darcy Mitchell and Adam Wood. Troy Webster in to net earned the shutout. Proud members of the 97/98 Russ Major Plumbing novices were: Denis Beenen, Matt Bester, Doug Deboo, Cam Delorme, Sarah Donnelly, Brandon Ernst, Josh Flynn, Andrew Fothergill, Ryan Knox, Daniel MacIsaac, Darcy Mitchell, Matt Moffat, Daniel Reilly, Shane Winters, Adam Wood, Tyler Young, Troy Webster and Scott Henderson. A special thanks to our sponsor Russ Major Plumbing and to our coaches for the fun year! Dufferin Aggregate Minor Tykes finish season in fine form. The Dufferin Aggregate minor tykes finished off the 97/98 season in winning form. In playoff action April 8th, the Aggregate tykes tied Sports Exchange 2-2. Tyler Johansen was on a tear, scoring both Orono's goals with Kyle Barr assisting on the first. On April 18th, the Aggregates came back to win the final 2-1. Jeremy Caruana led off by scoring the first Orono goal with Derek Snow and Nancy Burt assisting. The second was scored by Tyler Armstrong with Garrett Klompmaker and Shelby Macdonell assisting. What an exciting finish to a fun season. The team improved immensely throughout the sea- son. A special thank you to our coaches and sponsor Dufferin Aggregates for a fun year! f. * * f - M M Headed west to Canadian Team Trails Fourteen year-old Orono girl, Ashley Waggoner has been twirling baton compet- itively for most of her young life and now her efforts have led her to represent Ontario at the Canadian Team Trials in Saskatoon May 21 to 23. Ashley has been twirling baton competitively since she was four years old. She competed in the Ontario Team Trials at Durham College April 17, 18 and 19 and finished fourth in Junior 'A' Freestyle thus qualifying to compete in the Canadian Team Trials. Ashley is a grade nine student at Clarke High School and is coached by Dianne Serra and Tara Ramsey at the Nationals Baton Corp in Oshawa. Teammate Jamie Lynn Fudge of Oshawa also quali- fied to compete by finishing third in Senior 'A' Freestyle. Both girls will be leaving for Saskatoon May 20th. TRT atoms take first game of final playoff round Orono's TRT Sand and Gravel atoms defeated Justin Barry Optical in game one of their final 3-game playoff series last Monday night. Mark Spiers and Colin Maîtland played superbly on defense with forwards Mike Puddicombe, Andy Bangay and Joey Konopka making great passing plays -- but it was Joseph Staples who gave TRT the lead after receiving a neat pass from Scott McIntyre with two seconds left in period one. Joey Konopka did some great work in the second peri- od. At 11:50, Mike Puddicombe put one in to give Orono a 2-0 lead with Andy Bangay picking up the assist. The was nice passing play between Reid MacDonald and Justin Guillemette in the sec- ond and at 10:58 Guillemette found the mesh giving Orono a 3-goal cushion. At the 12:03 mark Scott McIntyre served a tripping penalty but TRT's defensive tandem--Chris Buttonshaw and Jon Fowler as managed to kill off the penalty. Justin Barry Optical eventu- ally put one past Orono's net- minder. TRT continued on page 5.. ............ -
