Pine Ridge Insurance house league novices ended the sea- son with two impressive wins, showing fans what team work is all about and walking away champions of division 3-B. Orono's first game on April 15 pitted them against Bowmanville's Sport Shop. It didn't take long for the boys to get on track as Pine Ridge's centre Jonathan Koerssen took a pass from Emma Lunn for the first goal. Jonathan Koerssen ended the first period with another goal on a breakaway beating Sport Shop's goalie cleanly. Bowmanville took one goal to the second. Jason Hoyne in the opening seconds made a superb play fir- ing one past the opposition net- minder with assistance from linemate Kenny Jackson. Minutes later, Jacob Stockwell aided by Dustin Armstrong pounded in goal number four. Luke Green cruised a goal con- verting a pass--again, from Armstrong. Sport Shop responded with with two goals. Jonathan Koerssen finished off the scoring with Emma Lunn claiming 2 assists to the game. Pine Ridge opened up the third period with a three goal cush- ion. Orono's Joshua Dobson, Michael Hisson, Nicholas TRT continued.. Saturday, April 18th fea- tured game two of the final playoff round against Justin Barry Optical. TRT was deter- mined to win this game but fate decided otherwise as it ended deadlocked at one. Orono's lone goal was scored with a minute and a half left in the first period by sniper Justin Guillemette. TRT's one- goal lead held up until the third period when Justin Barry Richards, Tyler Lawrence Matthew Smith, Matt Fuller, Michael Whelan and Brian Konopka played with heart and determination in their quest for success, winning the game 6-3. Goal tender Nick Williams played an outstanding game. Orono's Pine Ridge team played its final game on the 18th against Bowmanville Sports Shop again. It proved to be an even match with both teams working hard. Pine's first marker came off the stick of Emma Lunn with assists going to Matthew Smitt and Jonathan Koerssen. The second goal Jonathan Koerssen pound- ed in for Orono was a beautiful give and go assisted by Tyler Lawrence. Sport Shop scored one in the second. The tension filled third period remained scoreless as neither team could mount an offensive attack allowing Orono to win 2-1. As we wrap the season up, the team would like to thank train- er Mike Whelan for his encour- agement and guidance, AI and Brenda Hoyne our dedicated managers, Jim Hisson our ever faithful equipment manger and our wonderful coach Steve Lawrence. It truly has been a great year. Optical managed to tie things up. Goaltender Kevin Martin played a strong game in net while blue liner Mark Spiers working hard on defense man- aged to save a goal. The game ended in a 1-all tie. The boys put forth a tremendous effort but they just came up short this day. Hopefully game three will pro- vide the boys with the win they desire. Try RICE St. John Ambulance First Aid and Safety Tips Sore muscles, sprains and strains, and injuries where bruising and swelling are fac- tors can all benefit from RICE-- a simple procedure that can help you heal faster. RICE stands for... • Rest • Ice • Compression • Elevation Rest means stopping the activity that caused the pain, and staying off it until a doctor says it's okay. Ice means applying cold to the injury as soon as possible. The cold shrinks blood vessels, reducing pain, swelling and bruising. Use a commercial cold pack, an improvised ice pack or a cold compress. A bag of frozen vegetables works well. Always put a cloth between the cold pack and the skin. Apply cold over the entire injured area--15 minutes on, 15 minutes off. Cold can be used for up to 48 hours following an injury. Compression uses a ban- dage to help limit swelling. An elasticized roller bandage works well, if put on properly. To put on an elasticized ban- dage, start about 5 cm below the injury. Wrap toward the injury, overlapping one third of the bandage width with each wrap. Start with the bandage quite tight, but not so tight that you restrict circulation. As you wrap over and above the injury, gradually make the bandage looser. Finish about 5 cm above the injury. Make sure the bandage is comfortable and the circulation has not been cut off. Check the skin colour and temperature below the injury periodically, comparing it with the other limb if possible. Swelling may also cause the bandage to become too tight. If this hap- pens, rewrap the injury. Elevation means raising the injured part--preferably to a level above the heart. This will reduce swelling and help fluids drain away from the injury. (Don't elevate a "locked" joint, that is, a knee or elbow that can't bend because of the injury.) As the snow thaws and you become more active, keep RICE in mind to help keep you on the move. St. John Ambulance can teach the basics for treating injuries. Call your local branch for more informa- tion. When Ice is Not Nice applying cold is generally good first aid, but it's not help- ful in every case. Don't use ice: • on an open wound • if circulation below the injury is impaired or if the person has a circulatory dis order • if the skin at the injury site is "tented" by pressure from broken bones under the skin • if the person is unconscious or semi-conscious, since they cannot tell you if dis comfort or frostbite occurs • if the person is sensitive to cold (just ask!), or if cold causes hives to appear St John Ambulance can teach you when to use cold or hot on an injury and other first aid. Apple Blossom finish year 'B' champs The Apple Blossom Shop novices took home 'B' champi- onship honours by defeating National Trust two games straight in their playoff finals. In game one back on April 3, Apple Blossom scored twice, within the first three minutes of play to take an early lead. Devon Robinson netted the first goal with assists going to Paul Bridger and Ben McKelvie. Orono's second goal was credited to Mike Hicks from Gregg Howe and Devon Robinson. National Trust man- aged to slide the puck past Orono's goaltender at the seven minute mark. Second period action began with a bang as the bankers scored within five seconds of the drop of the puck to tie things up at 2. Orono respond- ed by scoring the go-ahead goal with six minutes left in the sec- ond. That late second period goal stood up for the rest of the game giving Apple Blossom the 3-2 victory. Take series in 2 games After a 2 week layoff, Apple Blossom suited up to play game two versus National Trust on April 17. Orono took the early lead when Devon Robinson scored from Mike Hicks up from Mark Franko. National managed to score two in the second but Orono came back with another goal this time from Lucas Leech with assists going to Heather Maitland and Jessie Rice. The second period ended tied at 2. National Trust took a 3-2 lead in the third. Orono tied it yet again--only this time it was a goal by Andrew Kirkbride assisted by Robyn Henderson up from Daniel Hodgeson. Of notable mention was the defen- sive play by Kyle Balson and Scott Henderson during this nailbiter. Orono thought for sure, they'd be back for a third play- off game. But, with 1.6 seconds left in the game--Lucas Leech found paydirt giving Apple Blossom the 'B' championship trophy! "Way to go Apple Blossom!" Gregg Howe and Paul Bridger assisted on Leech's goal. "Thanks to our coaches Frank Maitland and Brad Leech, trainer Rick Howe and Manager Peggy Rice."
