~Q Orono WeeklyTlxnes, We~nes~iay~ April 2~ 1998 When the f rogs go marching in Tis spring, when a young frog's fancy turns to the cati of duty. Ever heard the trill of a toad or the snoring sound of a leopard frog?ý Each spring these amazing amphibians (this Greek word refers to the frogs double life as a tadpoie first and an aduit later) catlinm their own unique voice, from the ponds at Second Marsh. This mission.for these rest- less and ionely maies, is to attract a mate. The femates upon hearlng the song of their maie counterpart, cau- tiousiy make their way to the ponds, breed for a few short seconds and leave thousands, of want-a-be tadpoles to fend for themselves. The aduits then head off into the sunset. Every sprlng, thanks to funding from Environment Canada, we -record the species cafling, their numbers and locations around the Second -Marsh. We like to think Of it as a frog report card. Over the past four years, we have seen a slow recovery of the varlous popu- lations with on average, five species calling. We monitor amphibians because they are so sensitive to envlronmentai changes, like water quality. It is this sensltivity that gives scien- tists an excellent snapshot of the health of an ecosystem like Second Marsh. If you are interested in learning more' about this fasclnating pro- gram, join James Kamnstra and Frlends at a workshop belng held at the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority, Wednesday, May-6 from 7:00 p'.m. to 9:00 p.m. For those of you who are reai- ly adventurous, dress for a night hike and we wiil take you out for some amphibian encounters of the Second king.
