Thus, at Newtonvflle, we do flot yet have a clear picture of staffing, budget, and school organization for next year. Please be remlnded that the Ministry of Education announce that at the elemen- tary level the board-wide class averagesize xii be 25. That means classes could be somewhat larger than 25 or somehatsmaller than 25 (.e. The average of 20 and 30 is 25). In the past, there has been a special grant to keep grade 1 and grade 2 classes at a maximum of 20. This grant bas been removed. As definite information becomes avallable, it xii be shared with the school'community. GRADE 3 TESTING The students ln grade three will be involved in two different testing situations this year. During the week of April 27th, the chldren wrote a mathematics test for the Board. This test will not gen- erate scores for the individu- al children. During the week of May 25th, the children will be involved in the 5-day long assessment by the Educational Quality and Accountabillty Office (Provincial Level). This willl produce an individual report for each child tested as well as a summary report for the school. During these times it is even more Important for the chlldren to be well rested and ready to work in order to do their best. Additional information bas been and will be sent home to the parents of the grade three chfidren. St. Stephen's School News by Krlstyr Burke St. Stephen's is extremely busy wth activities planned for the month of May. this past week was Education Week and students benefltted from many diffrent presen- tations. On Wednesday, a group called Covenant Players came and spoke to students about peer pressure, being an Individual, and the dangers of alcohol abuse. Students were very amused by the comedlc scripts put on by this group., On Thursday, a mem- ber of the Durham Distress Centre came to speak about abuse, healthy relationships, and the need to speak up when a problemn arises. Hands on activities and improvisational skits done by senior students were a part of the presentation. The week wound down on Friday evenlng with a Sighits and Sounds vldeo dance - the last dance of the year. There was a great turn out and fun was had by ail who attended. New York, New York.. Forty students and teachers boarded a bus early Thursday momning for a four day fun filled trip to the Big Apple. Plans lncluded visits to the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, John Lennon's former residence, churches, and, of course, the stores of New York City. The Prom is the blggest upcoming event this month. It will be held on May 29th at Cullen Gardens in Wihitby. One hundred and forty stu- dents xiii be dressed in their best finery for an amazing evening. The flnishing touch- es are being done to make Prom '98: "A Niglit under the Stars" a huge success. Graduates are feeling the pressure noxv that their days of higli school are coming to an end. Clarke High' School News NEW STUDENTS' COTINCIL Last xeek, students' coun- cil elections w'ere held at Clarke. Students nominated for various positions xvere requlred to stand and deliver a speech to the 1997-98 stu- dent counicil members as to xvhy they xouid be a good candidate for the positions. On May th Kirby Public School had their yearly "Talent Day" which proved to be a huge success with both parents and kids alike. The 24 acts varied from 2 Spice Girl songs, a magie act, an uncanny lip syncing performance of Chumbawumba's song "Tubthumping", seven excellent piano pieces, a violin piece, gymnas- tics, highland dancing and even a rendition of "Mary Had A Little Lamb" on the recorder. Mrs. Westheuser, the organizer of the event, says that the kids really enjoyed it and put a lot of their time and effort into the preparation of the event. Pictured are Heidi B, Aleisha P, Michelle V Jennifer L, and Bey N, the Kirby P.S Spice Girls. BalIlots were then cast and the voting was done exclu- slvely within students' coun- cil. Last Wednesday, when al of the votes were in, the elec- lion resuits were announced to the student body. Dan MacDonaid will be Clarke's Prime Minister for the 1998- 99 school year and Julie Harper will carry out the duties of Deputy Prime Minister. Rosanna Yankanna, whose articles often appear in the Clarke News, xiii be the new secretary and Meghan Crookshank will be the public relations officer. ARTSARAMA '98 on Wednesday, May 13 that's this evening. Clarke High School, and The Pines Senor Public School, xii be hosting their annual "Artsarama". This is an event where students, teachers, parents and memnbers of the com~munity share an evening of appreciation for the arts. There xiii be a showcase of artlstic taient includlng a dis- play of artwork and musical performances by stu dents of both Clarke and The Pines. Included in the program are the visual arts students, con- cert choirs, the B# Jazz Band, and vocal -and instrumentai soloists. The event is being held in Clarke's gym and tick- ets are being sold at the door for a modest fée of from one to three dollars.- By the way, for those who not only appreciate fine art, but fine food as well, there will be an intermnission with dessert! This is a great opportunity for everyone in the cornmunity to see the fine artlstic talents of both schools. Ail are welcome. Cen i ans STRING ORCHESTRA AT CLARKE? Mr. Blaine Sharpe, or B# as lie is affectionately known, bas been busy recruitin g stu- dents to begin an inaugurai class of stringed instruments for next year. Mr. Sharpe Is confident that the string orchestra will be a go because the talent is deep and num- bers look good. Just in case anyone is wonried 'about the' prospect of playlng a violin, don't forget that the term ..strings" can also be applied to a guitar.
