The total cost of the renovation was $3 50,000. Kybo. That's what we called it when 1 was a kid -- the kybo. I've heard that the name was an anagram for Keep Your Bowels Open, but 1 can't con- firm that. 1 do know that the kybo was known by other names: Backhouse, Outhouse, Boghouse and Wee House -- to name a handful. Domestic outhouses have al but vanished from the North American landscape and 1 think tlat's a shame. It's difficuit to describe them (let alone sing their praises) to kids at the tail end of the twentieth, century. Kids who have grown up with shiny bathtubs and porcelain toilets, without ever having to think about -hot and cold run- ning water. The John. The Jakes. The Necessary. The Comfort Station. Great places to sit and think, tse old outhouses. Stimulating. I remember sit- ting there one time gazing-at the crescent moon carved in the door. Why a crescent moon, 1 wondered. Out of curiosity 1 looked it up. It tumns out that the crescent mooni is an ancient symbol for women and 'way back in the days when only a fraction of the population could read, such symbols were required to keep men from accidentally stumbling into the ladies privies. (The symbol for the mens outhouse, by the way, was a circular 'sun'. It disap- peared about the time kybos went co- ed.) The Dunnie. The Closet. The Loo. The Head. Plenty of evidence of pio- neer cleverness in the construc- tion of outhouses aswell., That crescent moon was more than a mere design. Over two hundred vis itors toured the facility on Saturday,. and 3 kittens found new homes. functioned as a pretty service- able 'air freshener' in the days before air conditioning, and yet it was narrow enough to thwart unwanted animal intruders. 1A lot of early outhouses were whitewashed. Why white?, Think 'night'. In the days (and especially the nights) before street lights and flash- lights, a white building was a lot easier to Eind in the dark. The SmalI Room. The Reading Room. The Throne. I remember once wondering why most outhouse doors opened outward instead of inward. That made no sense at ail to me. A door that opened inward could be held shut with your foot toprevent someone fromn interrupting your revery. Why didn't the doors open inwards? I asked an old Finlander about that very mystery back when 1 lived in the bush near Thunder Bay. He looked at me as if I'd asked him which end of a shotgun 1 should point at a partridge. He explained that, while nocturnal animais such as, skunks, porcupines and large, dangerous bears have extreme curiosity regarding the contents of outhouses, they aren't really swift when it cornes to opening and closing doors. In other words,- inward-opening doors would make it very easy for animals to get in, but mighty tricky, to leave when their, um, curiosity had been satisfied.. The Honey Bucket. the Chapel of Ease.
