Orono Weely Times, Wednesday, October 21, 1998 -5 No shortage of goal scorerson Markham Label Peewees The Markham Label pee- wees rolled through the past week without a loss in three starts outscoring their opposi- tion 27-5. They mercilessly defeated Bobcaygeon, deci- sively shut the door on Minden while stealing a point from the Haliburton Huskies Friday night. The Label squad began their three-game stint on the road earlier in the week against Bobcaygeon handing them 17- 1 lop-sided loss. Dominating play was Orono sniper/play- maker Curt Robinson with five goals and four assists; Justin Szymczak was no slouch either offering up four goals and two assists. Rounding out the rest of the scoring for Orono were Kyle Cox with a single marker and three helpers; Tanner Millson came up big with a goal and five assists; Chris Moffat scored one; Kyle Searle and Kienan Williams each had a goal and an assist; Jesse Price scored one goal with three assists; Matt Barnes came up big with one goal and four assists while Brian Pisani assisted on two goals. Jamie Whitehead and Kevin Martin split goaltending duties this night. Friday night's home game against the Haliburton Huskies was a fast-moving, hard-hitting affair as the visitors tried out- muscling the hometown boys. But, the Leafs soon showed the visitors, they too, could play a physical game matching the Huskies hit-for-hit. Haliburton opened the scoring early in the first period but Kyle Searle responded by tying the game on a nice solo effort with fif- teen seconds left in the period. Haliburton managed to jump ahead in the second capitaliz- ing on some sloppy play in Orono's end. The Leafs came out hitting in the third creating numerous scoring chances for themselves. Jesse Price beat the Huskie goalie early in the third period on a low shot to the far corner cutting their lead by one with Searle assisting on the play. The Leafs worked hard to get the equalizer and were rewarded for their efforts with just 2:09 left in the game as Price and Searle set up Millson in the slot who blasted the puck high--past Huskie's goaltender allowing Orono to steal a point. Martin and Whitehead split the game in net. The Leafs, who made the long trek 1o Minden Saturday, certainly made if worth their while--skating aWaY with a 7-1 victory. Orono used strong physical play to heel the Minden squad while at the same time dominlating play in the corners. Oroino had a slow start to the gam( which was tied at'one after the first period. However, they put it away in the second beatdng Minden's goalie five times opening up a 6-1 lead. The Leafs scored one more in the third finalizing a 7- 1 score. Matt Barnes led Orono's offence scoring a hat-trick. Kyle Searle, Tanner Millson, Kyle Allin and Curt Robinson each contributed single mark- ers. Another playmaker, Justin Szymczak played a strong game for Orono setting up four Leaf goals. Tanner Millson and Curt Robinson each assisted on two goals while Chris Moffat and Kyle Allin had one assist each. Yet again, Orono netmin- ders Jamie Whitehead and Kevin Martin played solid between the pipes. The Markham Label pee- wees have a light schedule this week with only one game on the schedule--Sunday night at 6 p.m. against Woodville at the Orono Arena. Family Auto suffers first Ioss of season Apple Blossom Shop The Orono Apple Blossom atoms of the Clarington Recreation Hockey League opened their season with a spirited 3-0 shut-out over Bowmanville's Dairy Queen entry. End-to-end action with equal scoring opportunities for both teams made for an excit- ing first period which ended deadlocked at zero. Second period action saw Apple Blossom's Paul Bridger slide a pass from behind the net to Heather Maitland who let go of hard shot that Reid McDonald picked up the rebound and put away to open the scoring in Orono's favour at the 12:58 mark. Orono's second goal came courtesy of centerman Jonathan Picco who won the draw from the face-off. Brien Konopka, who was in perfect position at the hash marks in front of the net took a pass from Picco to make it 2-0 at 6:05. Just two-and-a-half min- utes later, in a great passing play from Maitland and Bridger, Reid McDonald found the mesh putting away his sec- ond goal of the night with a hard wrist shot over the goalie's stick. Orono goalie, Lucas Szemiot earned the shut-out playing a spéctacular game in net to record Apple Blossom Shop's first win of the season. Ilt appears that coach Frank Maitland's structured, disci- plined practices have paid off as the entire team put forth a great effort. Donut Gallery blanked Orono's Donut Gallery atom house league team took on Bowmanville's Pizza Pizza crew in their season opener, but just couldn't seem to put the puck in the net losing 7-0 in their debut. At one point, Matt Bester flew down the ice dur- ing a final breakaway just missing as the puck struck the goal post! The Family Auto Bantam Leafs played tough against a strong Haliburton squad this past Sunday suffering a 4-1 loss. The game was closer than the score indicates as Orono was still in it to the end, but just couldn't put the puck in the net. Orono applied some pres- sure in the first, but struggled to get the puck out of their own end. Luckily though, Chris Burritt was there making key saves to keep Orono in the game. Haliburton drew first blood in the first scoring a late goal taking a 1-0 lead. Orono turned up the tempo in the sec- ond peppering Haliburton's goalie with many shots howev- er, it was Orono that gave up the goal midway through the period down 2-0. The bantams fought right back to pull within one. During a scramble in front of the net, Matt Reid found an opening putting his team on the board. Aaron Robinson was credited with the assist. Orono looked to have the edge going into the third period as goal- tender Jeff Slemon made some good saves on careless mis- takes in front of the net. Once again, Orono took some bad penalties which ended up cost- ing them the game as Haliburton scored two more on the power-play sealing the win. This was Family Autos first loss of the season.
