FROM PARLIAMENi HI LL Alex Sehr Well here we go- again standing at the crossroads, as Canadians always do ln the wake of a Quebec elec- tion. At th-is point, unless some- tbing drastlc bappens, it appears Quebecers will re- elect anotber separatist gov- emment. Quebe's election lsntjust about separatism but about many of the thinga we ln Ontario worry about too, like bealtb care. But wbat Quebec voters don't seem to get is that wben you put a separatists govemn- ment into power you get tbe wbhole animal, not just tbe parts you like. Tbat means another referendum wtbin the next four years. As a country we cannot continue living wltb this con- stant threat over our beads. Or as Quebec nationallsts are fond of saying, "witb a knlfe to our throats." Canada'sëexis tence bas reached a crossroada. It is one of tbe most suc- cessful countiies in the world welding diffrent cultures and ethnic groups together. Wby, then, can't we choose our pathway to the future? Wby does part of tbe herd wisb to go in one direction and the rest another? We can't seem to develop syrnbols of natlonbood, nor evolve as a nation, because we continue to face off against eacb otber. Every time we bave anoth- er referendum, or "neveren- dum," uncertainty increases. Foreigners question tbe value of our currency and they curtail investinent ln our The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board is pleased to announce it will be sharing Its facilities on D'Arcy Street in Cobourg wlth the Northumberland -County Social Services, Ontario Works, department over the next few weeks. Fromn November 13 for approximately two to four weeks, office areas on the first floor of the Cobourg Education Centre will be home to about 22 Social Services department employ- ees. They are being displaced temporarily while their offices undergo unexpected- con- struction. "We are pleased to be able to help our community part- ners," says Bryan 'Fisher, Superintendent of Administrative Services. "Given our desire to be good corporate-neigbbours and the E thics co'mmittee seek volunteer member country. In Quebec, compa- nies defer lnvestmaent and expansion decisions and unemployment increases. Wby Quebecers can't relate this to issues they see as important like healtb care, government financing and personal income tax, is a mystery. A high percentage of Quebecers don't want anoth- er referendum but vote for the party that la going to deliver just that. i tblnk an argument can be made that the rest of Canada sbouldn't wait for another referendum but begin setttng our own agenda as a nation. Perbaps Plan B bas to be revislted and the issue of partltioniment once again beard. Ironlcally, the geographical areas in Quebec wbere sepa- ratism is bigbly supported are the areas wbere people are the poorest and have for generations, sucked on the federal support system. 1Clearly tbe rest of Canada would be flnanclally better off wtbout tbem and their stan- dard of living would take a significant nose dive. But bey, if you want to bebave like an unruly cbild perhaps you are better off on your own. Mr. Charest ia giving bis ail in this election and will do s0 rigbt to election day.
