Mediation/arbitration, dates set for December On November 13, 1998, the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholie District School Board and the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association met with Justice Kcith Flanigan in preparation for the upcoming media- tion/arbitration. Justice Flanigan agreed with the parties ta the use of Mr. David Whitehead as a pre-mediator by bath parties. The first date for pre-media- tion with Mr. Whitehead was scheduled for November 24, 1998. The actual mediation/arbi- tration ta be conducted before Justice Flanigan will com- mence on December 21, 22 and 23, 1998. The further dates of January 6 and 8, 1999 have been set aside by Justice Flanigan If needed. Justice Flanigan was appointed by Ontario Labour Minister Jim Flaherty on October 26, 1998 as a medi- ator/arbitratar ta deal wlth the dispute between the Board and the Teachers. Justice Flanigan is required, under the "Back ta Work Legisiation," ta begin media- tion and arbitration proceed- ings within 30 days and make an award within 90 days unless an agreement is reached first. OToale, MPP Durham East, along with other members of the Ontario government, have called on the Minister of Health ta sup- port Ontarians suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. Responding ta constituent calis on this issue, O'Toole has urged the Honourable Elizabeth Witmer, Minister of Health ta include the new drug Anicept in the Ontario Drug Benefits program. This new drug holds hope for many suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. "Alzheimer's Disease takes an incredible toil not only an its victims, but on family members as well," said OToole. "Any measure that aur govemment can take ta alleviate some of the suifer- ing is important" Alzheimer's Disease effects over 100,000 Ontarians each year, growing at a rate of 3 per cent annually. Most of those affected are over 65 years of age causing irre- versible loss of mental abili- ties, ultimately robbing its victims of their memories and their ability ta function Inde- pendently.
