12- diono. We~kIyTixnes, Wednesday, December 2, 1998 Finding Our spiritual home Janie Dodds (L) and Sylvia Vanhaverbeke shared thuir talents at the Kirby United Church Sunday night service. "There is a big increase in the desire for spiritualism in peoples lives," said Sylvia Vanhaverbeke, "a longing in their hearts for mneaning in their lives." The key to spirituality is asking questions, dlaims Sylvia. "Why do 1 believe this?" "And the basis of spiritu- al experience is through shared stories, either through scripture or stories from each other. " Sylvia Vanhaverbeke, M.Div. was asked to speak at the Kirby United Church Sunday night on the topic, 'Why do we go to church any- way'? Sylvia drew much from her own personal faith journey and came to the coniclusion that; "we go to church to: share our stories, to communal- ly connect with the divine, and to be part of a 'particular' group of people who rise up to sup- port us as we joumney together through life." Special music-was provided by Soprano Soloist Janie Dodds, who also organized the service. Janie sang 'H1e Touched Me' and 'l Believe' before the message and 'Bless this Church' immediately there- afier. Refreshments were served in the church basement follow- ing the service. "THE BEARS CONNECTION" .:s:ll:ng andmadhýbearsmon;;riday evening for Curly, Valentino, Fortune, Glory, Peace & Maple Com->munity Christmas feast Newcastle community hall A complimentary Christmas Feast will be held on Christmas Day,, Frlday, December 25th at the Newcastle Community Hall from the hours of 12 p.m to 3 p.m. Ail are welcome to come and Join your neighbours ti celebration. The organizers would onily ask that you bring a "Sile." It was Newcastle resident, Mrs. Isobel Rappaport, who brought this idea to Newcastle after having expe- rlenced this same celebration while visiting her daughter and farnily lni Rhode Island. A Christmas Feast of turkey and ail the trimmings was held at the Newcastle Community Hall Christmas Day of 1994. The outpouring from the community was tremnendous. As the word s_pread throughout the com- munlty of this event, the tele- phone cails started to come from those who wished to contribute ti whichever way they could - cooking, baktng, peeling potatoes, serving or even helping wth the enter- tainment. Unfortunately a void has been left since that lime until now. Newcastle res- idents, Wille Woo and Donna Metcalf, along with Isobel Rappaport have decided that the tradition must continue. Willie particIpated with the flrst Christmas Feast and the event left a lasttng impression that "there definitely is more joy in the giving than the recetuing." The seed was for- ever planted. The organrizers extend the invitation to those through- out the Municipality to attend for what should tumn out to be a gala aftemnoon of fun and laughter topped off by a fine traditional turkey dinner. If necessary, volunteer drivers will provide trans- portation for the handicapped and any others in need of a ride. The idea is that if you wish to attend then there should be no reason why you can't attend. For information on how to attend the Christmas Feast, or if you wish to volunteer, please caîl Willie Woo/Donna Metcalf at 987-5635. What a're you pay , ing for Life ln'su'ran të
