When the city of Toronto sense s a lack of civic pride witbin their citizenry, they turn to beer. A few weeks ago Mayor Mel Lastman regaled us ail once again with his lat- est scheme - a beer brewed in Toronto, by Torontonians, only to be available in Toronto. The namne of the beer -- 'Toronto's Own'. Lastman said beer drinkers will swell with pride when they saunter up to their local bar and order a7éTronto's Own'. The beer is stili being developed but when it is ready for testing, Lastman said he wanted those t wo guys from Cheers to be on the panel of taste testers. He's sa proud he lias to get approval from American beer drinkers for his 'Toronto's Own' brand. 1Lastmnan made a point of saying, this beer will flot be available in the 905 area. Guess what Mel, do you know how many people in the 905 area would even want to suck back a cool 'Toronto's Own'? Noooobody! Mayor Lastman would do well to stop lis navel gazing and take a good look outside his 416 area and take some lessons on civic pride. 1 have ofien wondered why, when other groups contin- uously line up at municipal trougli for money, the group that runs and maintains the Orono Arena insist on doing s0 without taxpayers money. Ray BesterPresident of the Orono Amateur Athletic Association made it clear in his presentation before Council last Monday evening, that they were looking for support from the Municipality, but in no way was lie soliciting money. When 1 questioned Mr. Bester later on this strategy, lie replied, "the commu- nity is proud of that arena, they built it, they paid for it, and tliey run i Civic pride does not corne in a little brown bottle,. it takes many years of liard work by a dedicated citizenry to develop. And when you've got it, it shows. Double Digit thinking by Roy Forrester It is quite obvious that counicil of the Municipality of Clarington was in a Double Digit Mode a week ago last Monday behlnd closed doors and as well a reall love-in for their Mayor. One year into their relgn of office and they flnd reason to take double digit pay increases for their efforts and to as well drafting the increases retroactive back to January of this year. It could be noted they had only been ini office for less than a two month period. Sa the fact Is that after twa months they take a raise. Well earned no doubt. The Mayors salary increases by 28 percent as of January 1, 1998, $35,092 to $45,000. The muicipallty increase goes to $50,000 by the year 2000 a percentage increase of 30 percent over a two year perlod. With remuneration fram the Region the mark for the Mayor bits $73.795 by the year 2000. Counicillors take a 13 percent Increase after their two months in office golng fromn $15,899 ta $18.000 and then Up ta, $20,000 by the year 2000, a 20 percent increase. The twa Claringon councillars attendlng Regional counicil have a further addition that will reach in total ta $43,795 by January 1, 2000. These are part-tlme joabs. The general workfarce at this periad in time have a difficuit time in edging out a couple of percentage points in increased salaries. Apparently there was Just cause for the increases doled out in the three hour closed-doar session. According ta news reports councillars voiced a need for an increase in remnuneration ta the Mayor. 'A mayor love-n' and one mlight ask - "how did we get along up ta this point an somethlng 30 QRONO WEEK-LY Tiivis - e e e ee- e e 1999 at the Rayai Canadian Legion. Hwy., #20, Fonthill. Thank you Sharon Fanon Pelhani Reunian Comn-dttee percent less than the future holds?" 0f course not ta put ail the blame an the Mayor the decision came that an increase of 20 percent would flot be objectianable for counicillors. With the Mayar's Clarington's salary at $48.000 and counicillors at $ 19,200 as of the first of 1999 (only a few days left) this municipality Is well in line, if not above, others in the Region. In fact Mayor Nancy Diamond of Oshawa receives $49.6 10 and Oshawa's councillors receive $16.540 somewhat less than the Clarington figure of $19,200. One cannot compare these two municipalities as near equal. It is amazing, after ail the words of provincial downloading onto the municlpality that there is money available for such increases and for a cauncil. for the most part, that are just entering their apprenticeship. There is no justification for the Double Digit percentage increasesthat have been approved for and by Clarington counicil. They are out of line through a decision laclng in maturity. Certairily it has ta be questioned that the debate was held tatally in camera, an indication of an abuse of mn-camera session. But Is such abuse surprising? A legacy by the last of big speniders. I would like ta ta]k ta you about the pollution that you are glvlng off into the atmno- sphere. Recently I've grne by your plant called, Blue Circle Cement. and Ive talked ta my parents about ail of the pol- lution that your plant gives off. We have also talked about It in science class and every- one in my science class, lncluding my teacher, agrees that something should be done because there are some people who have asthma and other resplratory ilînesses wha are greatly affected by pollution. If pollution was reduced flot as many people wauld have problems wlth these diseases and that wauld make Clarlngtan a bet- ter place ta live. It would also cut down on health care cas.ts because these people wouldn't need as much med- ical attention. There are ather reasons why yau should try ta contraI poill'ition and th e greatest is the fact that you are aciding ta the acld ramn prablems, creating more problems with (continued page 3) rvl
