r Orono Weekly limies, Wdedy Decemb)er 2, 1998 - 7 Remembering the v ictims of the Montreal Massacre A Candlelight Vigil remem- bering the women who were killed in the 1989 Montreal Massacre will be held on December 6 at the Local 222 Union Hall, rooms 1 and 2, 1425 Phillip Murray Ave., Oshawa, beginning at 6 p.m. On December 6, 1989, 14 young women, ail engineer- ing students at the Ecole Polytechnique ln Montreal, were gunned dclWfl ât th@ school by Marc Lepine. As he fired, Mr. Lepine was heard shouting "You're ail a bunch of feninists, and 1 hate femi- nists." on the ninth anniversary of the massacre, the CAW Local 222 Women's Committee and the Oshaw7a YWCA will join together to commemorate the lives of thege Yôuinl Women, through a program that acknowledges ail women who have diled as a resuit of violence. This vigil will also be an opportunlty to reinforce the importance of working to eliminate violence in aur communities and our lives. Guest speakers will include Tammy Crawford, the victim of a brutal sexual assaultiIn Oshawa, and her mother Kathy, CAW Local 222 President Mike Shields and Oshawa Mayor Nancy Diamond. They will be jomed by representatives from Denise House, Bethesda House and many others on what is now known asý the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. About Assistance for Hepatîtis C Suffrers Hepatitis C is a blood-borne virus that can have devastating effects on some 'of its victims; leaving them unable to work, to pay their mortgages or to provide food for their families. This is the tragîc. human toil of hepatitis C. That's why, in the spring of 1998, Ontario Premier Mike Harris declared his government ,s intention to provide financial assistance for ail individuals who contracted hepatitis C as a resuit of receiving blood or Iblood products in Ontario. It is the government's position that these victims, through no fanît of their own, have sufered and are continuing te, suifer. The time for action is now. To that end, the Ontario government is beginning the process of delivering fair and equitable treatment for these people. The first step' in this confidential process is to identify ail potential victinis who may have contracted hepatitis C as a resuit of receiving, blood products in Ontario before 1986 and after june 30, 1990. This w'Ould include:, - Ail Ontario residents who know or suspect that they have hepatitis C as a resuit of receiving blood products in Ontario. *Ail former Ontario residents who know or suspect that they have hepatitis C as a resuit of receiving blood products in Ontario. *Ail people who know or suspect that they have hepatitis C due to contact with a spouse, partner, or parent whose hepatitis C was the resuit of receiving blood products in Ontario. Thtis would flot include: - Those who contracted hepatitis C between january 1, 1986 and june 30, 1990 as they fali within the umbrella of federal-provincial assistance being negotiated within class actions.
