Ooo Weekly imes, Wednesday, December 9, 1998 - 5 Markham Label peewees top dog "in Havelock The Markham Label Peewee Leafs captured the "A" Championship in a tournament in Havelock on the weekend by defeating Scarborough, Tamworth and Douro. The first game Orono played was against the Scarborough Sabres. Orono dominated this match enroute to an 8-1 victory. The second game of the day was against Tamworth to deter- mine who would advance to the "A" championship game. Jesse Price started the scoring for the Leafs as he banged home a lose puck from a goal mouth scramble. Kyle Searle and Tanner Millson assisted on the goal. Tamworth managed to even the score as an Orono clearing pass bounced off a Tamworth player. Orono then took control of the game as they scored 3 consecutive power play goals. Tamworth managed to make it 5-2 with a powerplay marker of their own on a 2 man advantage, but Kyle Cox answered that one back. Tamworth scored once more, and Paul Richter finished the scoring to make the final score 7-3 in favour of the Leafs. The Leafs faced off against Douro for the championship and they cruised to a 7-0 victo- ry, as they scored once in the first period, 4 times in the sec- ond and twice in the third. Kyle Searle started the scoring on the power play with Matt Barnes and Curt Robinson assisting. Robinson counted the second Orono marker as he converted a Brian Pisani pass. Tanner Millson had the third Orono marker with Searle assisting. Matt Barnes scored the next two goals just 8 sec- onds apart with Robinson and Justin Szymczak drawing the helpers on both goals. Searle scored his second goal of the game to make it 6-0 before Szymczak finished the scoring for the Markham Label squad. Robinson and Jesse Price assisted on the Searle marker with Chris Moffat and Brian Pisani getting the assists on the Szymczak goal. Kevin Martin and Jamie Whitehead split the goaltending duties to earn the shutout. Curt Robinson earned MVP honours for his 5-point performance. Congratulations to the Markham Label team for their second "A" championship of the year. Markham Label Continue winning streak. The Markham Label Peewees extended their win- ning streak to 12 with victories over Bobcaygeon and Ops this week. The Orono squad defeated Bobcaygeon at home on Friday night by an 8-2 mar- gin. Kyle Cox led the way for the Leafs as he had a 5 point night with 4 goals and 1 assist. Justin Szymczak and Chris Moffat had 4 points each as they had a goal and 3 assists each. Kyle Searle and Jesse Price had the other Orono goals. Price also had 2 assists on the night while Kienan Williams, Kyle Allin, Brian Pisani, Curt Robinson and Kyle Searle each contributed a helper. Jamie Whitehead earned the victory in net for the Markham Label squad. Orono traveled to Ops on Sunday and skated away with a 4-1 victory. Kyle Searle opened the scoring for Orono early in the second period as he took a pass in the slot from Curt Robinson and buried the puck in the top of the net, Jesse Price assisted. Justin Szymczak increased the lead to 2 goals as he tipped a Chris Moffat point shot past the Ops goalie. Matt Barnes put Orono up by 3-0 as he banged home a lose puck from a goal mouth scramble. Curt Robinson and Justin Szymczak assisted on the goal. Ops managed to break Kevin Martin's shutout early in the third period but Justin Szymczak scored an empty net goal to make the final tally 4-1 in favour of Orono. The Leafs will travel to Haliburton on Saturday to take on the Huskies and return home on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. for a rematch with the Ops Flames. Dufferin Adults Aggregates f kae ie McDonald's The Dufferin Aggregates Minor Tykes hockey team took on the McDonald's team from Bowmanville on Friday. The Orono club led the scoreboard throughout the game, however, the visiting club squeaked in a goal in the last two minutes of play. Randy Clugston potted both goals for Orono. Despite great efforts by Brandon Cox, Anthony Bortalazzo and Cameron Crozier, the tykes could only manage a 2-2 tie. McDonald's had quite a few scoring opportunities, but were robbed by Orono's goaltender Christopher Lunn who came up with some terrific saves. Action will resume again next weekend with games slat- ed for Friday and Saturday. Lynda McCullough concen- trates on her footwork during the Adult Skate program. Apple Blossom tries hard but comes up short Cn slmmer The Orono Country Cafe AtomReps play was on sim- mer, but they turned up the heat for Bewdley. On Dec. 1 Orono hosted Millbrook. Millbrookjumped to a quick 3- 0 lead but Orono rallied for two goals to make it a close game. Steven Burt sent David Landman in on the breakaway but was denied the tying goal in the closing seconds. Orono's first goal was scored by Darcy Mitchell assisted by Stephen Hicks and Ryan Campney. Ryan Campney scored the sec- ond assisted by Stephen Hicks and Darcy Mitchell. The final score was 3-2 for Millbrook. On Dec. 4 the referees had their job cut out for them. This game was marred with penal- ties, a broken skate and broken hearts. The boys were glad to see the end of this game. Orono was outgunned by Ops approximately 4-0. Orono roared back on Dec. 6 in an exhibition game with Bewdley. Orono went home 4- 1 winners. This was a great game! Matt Puddicombe was extremely sharp posting anoth- er shutout. It was a scoreless tie. The defense corp consisted of Ryan Wood, Lucas Martin, Steve Donadel and Colin Gilbride. they played flawless defense. The offense, Shelby MacDonnell, Tyler Armstrong, Scott Duquette, Alanna Picknor, Matthew Field, Jon DeVries, Gardiner Cole, Harley McColl and Tyler Johansen created some nice scoring chances for the team. Good Work team! Scott Henderson and Daniel Reilly. Ryan Campney direct- ed a beauty in the net from Stephen Hicks but the ref ruled no goal. Campney came back seconds later to score number 2, assisted by Stephen Hicks. Doug Garlick scored the third assisted by Steven Burt and Michael Fuller. Garrett MacDonald rounded out the scoring on a nice pass from Adam Wood and Ryan Knox. Andrew Fudge and Shane Winters both played great in the net. IT PAYS TO ADVERTISE 983-5301 The Apple Blossom Atom Orono Leafs lost a close one 4- 3 to Hutton transport Sunday. Hutton had the lone goal in the first. Apple Blossom got on the board at 12:04 of the 2nd when Reid McDonald made the perfect centre ice pass to Mark Spiers who had no prob- lem with the defence and put away a nice wrist shot. Right winger Heather Maitland played her position well and did a good job in the corners and in front of the net. That's where she was at 4:54 of the 2nd when she took a pass from Reid McDonald to put in the go-ahead goal, over the goalies leg. Hutton tied it 2-2 at the 6 minute mark in the 3rd. Emma Lunn showed good aggressive hustle clearing her end and breaking away along the boards. Brien Konopka showed no let-up when he was going for the puck at full speed and crashed head-to-head with a Hutton player. Brent Vanstone and Josh Flynn did a great job on defence.
