ROI WEEK LY "49 1IMES 11ucledC Orono Town Hall Wednesday, December 16, 1998 CD fâ tkeqms 'oFf Law enforcement preferred to hunting ban The Clarington Hunting Committee reported thiat the hunting problems in Clarington are caused by trespassers. Durham Regional Police Staff Sergeant Te d fionne, Chairperson of the commnittee, made his commnittees report public at Monday's Council meeting. "Further it was deter- mined that the lack of enforce- ment is a cause for conicerni," stated liionne. The Committee found there were fewer hunters this year than ever before. Since Junie, no more than 12 complaints of trespassers and people hearing gun shots were made. The buffer zone around the Kendal Crown lands lias been ipuling this project through. Glady per- the committee learned that they are flot against hunting, thougli they are in favour of increased enforcement on trespassers and hunters who violate the rules. The committee acknowl- edge that hunting setbacks around schools and public buildings i rur-al areas should be re-examined. Mrs. Steele of Newtonville recently addressed council with safety concerns related to inadequate buffer zones around public buildings surrourided by agriculturally zoned land. Hunting activity could take place within 100 yards of thý Newtonville Public Schiool, and various public buildings throughout the munie ipality. Tom MacDonald, a member of this 'Coimittee lias written a letter to counicil with a petition attachied asking that hunting flot be banned south of the 8th line of Clarke Township. This was in response to a request made earlier this year by Mr. Eric Atkins that such a ban be intro- duced. Mr. MacDonald's letter states hunting in the area is necessary as a mneans of keep- ing the population of deer, coy- otes and certain other wildlife from getting out of control.
