r Orono Weekly Tîmes, Wednesday. December 16, 1998 - 3 appy 85th birthday Long time Orono resident, Eugenie Jonckheere turned 85 last Thursday. Friends and relatives held a party in her honour on Sunday afiernoon, at her current residence - Newcastle Health Care Centre. FriomtAround Hm by Roy F!rrester This week it is going to be Fromn Around Home'. It's somewhat of a 'love-in' that has been golng on for miany many years. Nolsy at timnes, no doubt, but at Urnes somnewhat sweet and mellow. I would hope. Th1-e love-in came in 1947 but both parties have notches that record upwards of three-quarters of 'a century. it imakes for, a few creaks and squeaks- but then that's life. At least you know that you are ailive If tbe creaks and squeaks corne. This story does have a musical undertone. If you thought it was Roy and bis Selmer trumpet you bit tbe right note or perhaps the right chord. The whole love affair bas taken on somewbat of a new life of late. It is one of, those tbings that just seems to happen. 0f cour se for almost everytbing there is a reason. In fact tbere Is a reason for everything. The Seimer trumpet bas served mie well ever since it's purchase, secondhand, for $700, in 1947. At that price it was supposed to be a good instrument. We bave been around togetber for baif a century and 1 rmust say witb very few scuffs and dents sbowing. If anytbing is lacklng it likely would have to be my ability. But playing the third trumpet part in the Concert Band I get along not too bad at most times. A recent visit to Long and McQuade music store in Oshawa I learn that Selmer no longer makes trumpets, and that in fact my horn could date back to the late twentys. If tbis was to be a fact it would almost place us as twins. 0f course I would bave an edge of a few, years. This conversation- in Oshawa somnewbat strength- ened tberelationship witb5 the trumpet. Naturely greater care and a real poiisbing after tbe Osbawa: visit. But tbere was more to corne and a furtber bonding. A new and excellent trumpet player bas joined tbe Concert Band and on tbe second nigbt out questioned the make of rny trumpet. "Henri Seirner", was my reply, "rmade in France." *t could be a vintage bomn and tbey are somewbat of a hot item in tbe U.S.," came the reply. Witb tbis I looked a lot dloser to find it is a Grande Prix model carrying 'the words and dates of "Geneve 1927 Liege 1930." Also engraved on tbe instrument is H. Selmer, 4 Place Dancourt, Paris, muade in France. Wben asking tbe imterest' in tbe U.S. for early Selmer trumpets our new acquain- tance said tbat tbe vintage Selmer is one favoured by most of the jazzmen. "No doubt you need some work on tbe bom but it may be wortb the cost." I shal look into this furtber for it migbt beîp in playing better longer. If notbing else it bas certainly stirred up a greater interest in playing and I note there is now more time put aside for practicing. The 'love-in' bas been strengtbened and you now know the reason. Mentoring opportu-nity One hour a week is all the time required to be involved in the Big Brother Mentoring Program. The Mentoring Program is a national program that Big Brothers of Clarington have just adopted this year. This program matches aduits with 7-9 year old children who would benefit from a one-to- one relationship. Teachers identify the children who are in need of this kind of a relation- ship, then Big Brothers match them Up with a Mentor. The one hour a week is spent-in school, during the school day. Masaud Vatandoust of Newcastle has been a Mentor since September and says, for him "itfs being able to do kids stuif, and putting back into the community." Masaud spends one noon-hour a week with his mentee at the Newcastle Public School. Any facility atthe school, provided it's not being used, is available. Masaud admits that his mentee would spend the entire hour behind the computer if he had his way. but they do go to the library, and the gym. It didn't take long for the teacher to notice the posi- tive influence this program was having on the student. The Mentoring programn is open to, all adults, men and wo men, 21 years and up. Mentors go through a screening process, and receive training on how to handle sensitive issues,, and what activities to do with' their mîentee. Mentors corne from alI walks of life. The organization states, 'if you are someoine who believes in life- long leaning-and would relish the-opportunity to feel like a kid again, this program is for Lishman (continued from page 1> grated fur manufacturing facili- ty on part lot 33, Concession 6 in Clarington. Though the committee did give opportunity for the publie to voice their concernis, they muade it clear theirdecisions were based on comments muade by the reporting agencies, ie. CLOCA, the Region's Health Department, etc. Based on those comments, the committee felt it had to approve the severance applica- tion. Linda Gasser, Bill Woods and Robert and Jean Kingsley have filed, an appeal with, the Ontario Municipal Board (0MB). They are appealing Clarington's zoning by-law, the Region of Durham Officiai Plan amendment, which also includes the Municipality of Clarington Official Plan Amendment. Once an application reaches the 0MB it is like starting over, since the 0MBhas the power to disregard any'previous condi- tions, and can set its own stan- dards on the cases it deals with. you'. Mentors are asked to make a commitment of one school year to their mentee. The programn runs fromn September to June, and only when school is in ses- sion, Carnie Camneron of Big Brothers Clarington is in charge of the In-School Mentoring Program and can be reached at 623-0750.
