GTA agricultural impact study to proceed The Federations of Agriculture ln the Regonal Municipalities of Durham, Halton, Peel and York have joined forces to conduct an Agricultural Economic Impact Study in the GTA. This study was launched in response to the pressures of urbanization on agriculture and to shed llght on an industry that is often overlooked in terms of its contribution to the econo- my of the GTA. The proxility of the rural area to a large urban market combined wlth the need for a sustainable and viable economic base ini rural areas presents rare opportunities for the agricul- tural ndustry. This study will address this unique challenge. It will identify the location and nature or agriculture in the GTA and assess the direct, indirect, and ïnduced eco- nýomic impacts of agriculture ini the four Régionis. Reports on the findings of' the Study will be prepared for each of the four Regions indi- vldually as well as a report for the four Régions com- buned. The project is sched- uled for completion by the summer of 1999. The resuits of the Study will be circulated to regional govemnments and their plan- ning and econormc develop- ment departments as well as federal and provincial job training service providers. The final Report wiIl serve as an important building block to the growing body of research on an industry that is often overshadowed in the GTA. The firms of Walton & Hunter Planning Assoclates, J.Ross Raymond Associates Ltd., and Betsy J. Donald mcip, RPP, will be undertaking this project. Combined, they have a unique set of skills in agriculture, rural planning and regional economic analy- sis. The three firmis also have extensive experience ti GTA issues. The project is being funded by the Federations of Agriculture ini Durham, Halton, Peel and York Regions and Hu-man Resources Development Canada.
