January is, Alzheimer Awareness Month across Canada anid this year'theme' Is Caregiver Stress. With over 300,000 Canadians, or 1 in 13 persons over the age of 65 wlth Alzheimer Disease, the impact for families 'and indi- vidual caregivers Is stagger- Ing. In Durham Region, more than three thousand familles are dealing with Alzheimer Disease and related demen- tias. By 2021 it is estimated that this will increase 300%. 1As part of local awareness initiatives, aIl physicians in Durham Region will be recelv- ing a package fromi the Azheimer Society of Durham 'Region containlng informa- tion about caregiver stress, diagnosîs, and support ser- vices provided by the Durham Alzheimer Society. An open house will be held at the Socîety's office at 419 Kng St., Suite 205 at the Oshawa Centre on January 7th, 2- 5 p.m.- On January 12th between 5:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., volunteers wlll be greet- ing commuters at Go Train entrances In Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax and Pickering for aur first annual Penny For Your Thoughts campalgn. A Caregiver Stress workshop with guest speaker Agnes Scott ofWhiUtby Mental Health Centre, will be held January 2Oth, 7 - 9 p.m. at the Oshawa Seniors Centre, 43 John St. West, Oshawa. In North Durham, staff and vol- unteers will be available on Januaryl8th, 1 - 4 p.m. at Brock House, 82 River St., Sunderland ta answer ques-, tions and provide iniformation about support and resources available from the Alzheimer Society and comrnunity agen- des. Staff and volunteers are also busy organizing A Time ta Remember, a Dinner Dance and Silent Auction fundralsing event ta be held February 6th at Annandale Golf and Country Club, Ajax. -Alzheimer- Disease ls a degenerative brain, disorder that affects a person's mental and physical abilities and behaviour by destroylng vital brain celîs. As the disease progresses, the ability to understand and communi- cate is lost, along with the ability to think clearly, move freely and live independent- ly. The inevitable resuit of the disease is complete depen- dence and eventual death. Alzheimer Disease is. most common in those over 65 but can strike adults at any age. There is no known cause or cure. Hericonnhection program launches supermarket tours, The -"Heart Cannection" Project is pleased ta announce that It wfil be mun- ning Supermarket Tours in Northumberland County. Supermarket Tours are aisle-by-aisle tours of the gro- cery stores, conducted by Registered Dietitians. Supermarket Tours give con- sumers an opportunity ta learn how to read food labels and make heart-healthy food choices. They're a fun and practical way ta learn more about nutrition and how the food we eat affects aur health. Tours will operate out of varlous grocery stores In Cobourg, Port Hope,* Brighton, Coiborne, and Campbellford. Other charges were drivling while under suspen- sion, possession of stolen property, contravention of Graduated Drivers Licences (Gi and G2 drivers), and other offences.
