They had only two games (both at home) and were able to win each of them. First was a 2-1 win over Millbrook and then a 4-2 win over Ops. On Sunday, December 20, the boys played hosts to Millbrook. This was the third and last meeting of the regular season for these two teams. It turned out to be a very good game with Orono holding on for a 2-1 victory. In the first, Orono looked as bit slow, but quickly got back into the game with some shots on the Millbrook goaltender. Jeff Slemon looked sharp in goal for Orono as he got the start. The first period was all goalies and ended scoreless. In the second, Orono came out with a little bit more jump and it paid off. Derek Heerschop scored, unas- sisted, on a nice backhand that found the back of the net. That was the way it stood late into the period when Lee Allin walked in from the blueline and rifled a shot into the top corner. Assisting on the goal was Matt Reid. That would be all the scoring in the second period as Orono held a 2-0 lead. Millbrook though, closed within a goal as they scored early in he third. Orono managed to shut Millbrook down and forced them to take some bad penalties to hold on to the win. In their first game of the New Year the boy's were at home again for a game against Ops. This was the first of two meetings these teams would have this season. Orono looked a bit sluggish in the opening minutes of this game and it looked like the long lay-off had made them rusty. Ops scored first mid-way through the sec- ond but Orono fought their way back and tied the game at 4:15 as Jeff Thompson got a nice pass from Derek Heerschop and walked in, untouched, and put it in the top corner. Orono made the score 2-1 as they capitalized on the power play as Derek Heerschop blasted a slap shot from the point that Matt Reid- tipped in. That was the way the second period ended but not before Orono had some excel- lent scoring opportunities. Chris Burritt had played a strong game in net and contin- ued the great work in the last period. Orono came out of the dressing room smoking. Matt Reid scored his-second of the game just 9 seconds into the third on a nice shot through the five-hole. Assisting on the goal was Dan Tresise. Nine seconds after that Derek Heerschop put one in from about the same spot after a nice passing play by Chris Field and Jef Thompson. That was all the goals Orono would get as they went into a tight checking defensive style for the remainder of the game. Ops did manage to score one goal late in the period on a power play. Final score: 4-2 Orono. The next home game is this Friday night at 9 p.m. against Beaverton.
