In the spotlight at Civic Auditorium Moment of glory for Donut Gallery and Apple Blossom. The holiday season was pretty special for many rea- sons, but for a couple of Orono house league teams--Donut Gallery and the Apple Blossom atoms, its not likely one they'll forget any time soon! The two Orono clubs had their five minutes of glory sharing the spotlight in a game of shinny together, between the second and third periods of an Oshawa Generals game Sunday at Oshawa's Civic Auditorium. There was no shortage of hometown supporters on hand as both teams went all out--full speed ahead on the huge ice surface, strutting their stuff while entertaining the crowd with their skating, stick han- dling and aggressive play. The players had great fun during their moment in the limelight while being show- cased in front of thousands. The spectators were pretty voiciferous showing their appreciation of the two Orono atom clubs. Exdting holiday hockey for Apple Blossom a toms The Orono Apple Blossom. Leafs had a great week of hockey commencing with the Newcastle Christmas tourna- ment December 29th, ending with 'their debut at Civic Auditorium between periods of an Oshawa Generals game then a league game win against Bowmanville Non Contact team in the middle. Game one of the Christmas tournament versus Newcastle appeared to the onlooker that the locals were outplaying their opponent however, in the end, they suffered a 2-1 loss. The lone Orono goal came from Joey Robertson who was right there to sink in the rebound after Reid McDonald's break- away opportunity. The loss took them out of the A final and pitted them against the Bobcaygeon Cougars. Paul Bridger opened up the scoring when he took the puck from deep inside his own end, around the Cougars defense then into the net after deeking out the goalie. Bobcaygeon responded with two goals.to move ahead. Jonathon Picco ended the sec- ond period with a tricky shot from the corner to tie things up. Third period was all Orono with Mark Speirs taking the puck from the faceoff letting go of a great shot with Matt Smitt flipped in the rebound over the downed goalie. Orono's insurance goal came from almost the same play when Picco made the great effort. The shot was rebounded to Brien Konopka for the 4-2 win putting Orono in the B final against Donut Gallery. Unfortunately for Apple Blossom, they came out flat and Donut Gallery were hot taking the game 4-1. Sunday saw the Apple Blossom gang turn things around when they downed the Non Contact team 4-2. Goalie, Lucas Szemiot who's .been playing consistently while trying to keep his team close, was strong in net. Things finally all came together for Coach Frank Maitland who's been struggling to determine the the winning combination of lines. Paul Bridger opened the scoring for Orono with a pass from Reid McDonald. Bowmanville responded with a goal of their own. Matt Smitt popped one in on a pass from Joey Robertson to make it 2-1. Bowmanville tied it at 2. Then, the nicest goal of the night came on a terrific passing play from Tyler Skelton ahead to Emma Lunn to Jonathan Picco who fired it home for what would be the winning goal. Joey Robertson scored Orono's insurance marker on a pass from Matt Smitt to post a 4-2 victory before they hustled off to Civic Auditorium. Donut G alery ushers in the new year wi a series of vtories The Donut Gallery was unbeatable in their game against T-Mack Insulation in Orono on December 26th. Matt Bester popped in the first, assisted by Kyle Dexter up from Cam Delorme. In the second period Matt slipped another one past the T-Mack goalie, assisted by Justin Westerink. T-Mack man- aged their only goal of the game in the second period with 4:40 left on the clock. With 31 seconds left in the game, Josh Moffat scored on an empty net, assisted by Matt Bester. Final score 3-1 Donut Gallery. In a rematch on January 2nd, Donut Gallery came away with another win. This game, played in Bowmanville, kept the fans on the edge of their seats. In the first period, Andy Kadykalo pumped in 2 goals, one assisted by Doug Deboo up from Robyn Henderson and the second assisted by Robyn up from Doug. T-Mack managed to sneak one by goalie Mike Hisson with 44 seconds left in the first period. T-Mack tied the game up in the second period. Donut Gallery thought it was to be another tie till Jonathan Koerssen scored with 1:29 left in the game assisted by Andy Kadykalo up from Cam Delorme. Final score 3-2 Donut Gallery. Donut Gallery headed out to Newcastle on December 28 for a tournament. Orono got blown away 7-0 by Newcastle #3. Newcastle scored 2 goals in the first, 3 in the second and 2 more in the third period. After some time off and a pep talk, Donut Gallery came back for a game at noon against St. Gertrude's of Oshawa. Orono came off the bench ready to win. In the first period Andy Kadykalo blasted 2 pucks into Oshawa's net assisted by Jonathan Koerssen up from Sarah Donnelly and the second assisted by Doug Deboo up from Garret Wood. Oshawa managed to get a point with 57 second left in the first period. Donut Gallery was pumped for the second period and put 4 points on the*board. Goals scored by Cam Delorme, Doug Deboo, Andy Kadykalo and a first for Justin Westerink. Assists were made by Jonathan Koerssen, Robyn Henderson and two for Josh Moffat, passed up from Brandon West, Joe Staples, Kyle Dexter and Blair Makenzie. Oshawa put one past Donuts goalie in the end of the second period. Oshawa scored twice in the third but it wasn't enough to Zachary Flood is one of TRT Sand and Gravel novices' hardwork- ing wingers. T RT Sand und Gravel truvel roud to success The TRT Sand and Gravel novices captured their second straight 'A' championship title, this time in Newcastle during the Christmas break by win- ning three consecutive games. Game one ended in a 12-1 romp over Sharon. TRT exploded for six goals in the second going on to out shoot their opposition a whopping 28-6. In game two, TRT surprised a previously undefeated Newcastle squad with an easy 11-1 win. The team scored four in the first, three in the second and four more in the third while unloading plenty of slick passing plays that handcuffed Newcastle all game long. Final shots were 21-9 in favour of TRT. Orono met met up with their toughest opposition of the tournament in the 'A' final-- pulling off a 5-4 victory over a solid Oshawa club. The team drew a comfortable 5-1 lead however, Oshawa made it close with three quick goals stop Orono. Matt Bester scored one assisted by Cam Delorme up from Tyler Mckenzie. Oshawa came back and scored one more in the third. Donut Gallery faced Orono's Apple Blossom in the B finals and the donuts dunked the flowers 5-1. The Donuts dropped 1 in Blossoms net in the first, point for Andy Kadykalo assisted by Garret late in the third period. TRT hung tough, keeping Oshawa from any shots on goal during the last two minutes of the game, nailing down another well-earned championship title. Final shots were Oshawa 9- TRT 8. TRT skated back into league aciion the following weekend winning both games played. The Capital Planners were the first victims falling 7-0 to the TRT club. Then, on Sunday, TRT blasted the Bowmanville Sports Shop 8-2. TRT has scored 43 goals while giving up only eight in their last five games--all wins and have outshot their opposi- tion 94-32. In fact, the team hasn't lost a game since their season opener (including exhi- bition and tournament games) and they've won two 'A' divi- sion tournaments... .Think its safe to say TRT had a great '98! Let's hope they have a sublime '99! Wood from Doug Deboo. Apple Blossom managed to squeeze one in Donut Gallery's net to tie the period up. Two more goals were scored in the second and one in the third. Point earners were Cam with 1 and Matt Bester with 2 assisted by Sarah Donnelly and Cam Delorme for 2 up from Tyler, Blair Mckenzie and Jonathan Koerssen. Donut Gallery came away "B" champs.
