Garbage in, garbage out, al withmn 24 hours. That's the role Sof the Municipal Transfer Station at the very end of the Clarke/Darlington Townline. The site, a former Ministry of Transportation Works Yard, needed very iittle modificat ion to turn it into a waste transfer station, and one that Manager, Ann Dreslinski says works very well. The transfer site, which the municipality leased to Canada Waste Services Inc. bas been operatmng for one year. Five garbage trucks leave the station early each morning to pick up the municipalities' residential garbage lefi at curb- side. Lateiy residents have been putting their garbage on top of the snow banks at the end of their driveways. It is as dif- ficult for the garbage collector to get it off the bank, as it is for the owner to put it up there relates Dreslinski. When the truck is full, it returns to the transfer site and drops its approximately 10 tonne load inside what used to be a sand dome. Inside the dome, a front end loader picks up the garbage, puts it tbrough a compactor, then loads it onto one of six large trailers. When the trailer is full, approximate- ly 28 tonnes, it goes to the land- fili site in Napanee, where the Joad is dumped. On a Tuesday and Wednesday, the biggest garbage days in the municipali- ty, a total of 6 trailer loads go to Napanee. Besides picking up and transferring aIl of Ciarington's garbage, the transfer site also handies commercial garbage for the Region of Durham and Northumberland County. On an average 150 metric tonnesof garbage move through the site every week. For $7 per car load, or $90 per tonne, waste that can not be lefi at the curb, can be brought to the transfer site.
