During that month, The Kidney Foundation of Canada holds its annual March Drive Campaign. More than 85,000 volunteer cari- vassers nationwide, 12,00 0 in Central Ontario alone, willl knock on their neighbours doors to raise funds for The Kidney Foundation. Funds support medical research and provide services to kidney patients and their familles. Kldney disease ranks slxth among diseases causlng death ini Canada and affects more than two million Canadians. As the only' national volunteer organiza- tion dedicated to helplng those living with kidney-dis- ease, The Kidney Foundation plays a vital role in meeting the special needs of patients and ini improving their quali- ty of life. The Foundation pro- vides educational and emo- tional support such as information and referral, patient manuals and brochures, and peer support and renal education pro- grams. That is why the March Drive is so important. "Kýidney patients and their familles count on us to provide ser- vices that will help them live better with their ilness. They look to The Foundation for information and support," says Peter Davis, President of The Kidney Foundation of Canada, Central Ontario Branch. -Without the March Drive we wouldn't be able to provide much needed pro- gram--s."~ Ail of the money raised by The Kidney Foundation of Canada cornes from private donations. We receive no gov- ernmrent funding. We rely on the generosity of the public and the help of thousands of volunteers. People volunteer for The Kidney Foundation for a variety of reasons. Some have a close personal tie to the organization and want to give back to The Foundation that bas helped them. Others simply want to help a worthy charity. Stan Trafford is one volun- teer that appreciates ail The Kiüdney Foundation did for his wife. Stan's wife, Margaret, was a dialysis patient for five years before her death last January. Throughout her 11- ness The Kidney Foundation was supportive of her. "When I fou nd out about the benefits we were getting from The Kidney Foundation and al the money that was going into research, I realized how worthwhile it was to volun- teer," he says. Stan has been a March Drive canvasser for five years now. Over the years he has- canvassed more and more streets near his home in Mississauga and taken on .more responsibility. Twvo years ago he was asked to be a Team Captain and Stan has fulfilled that role.gloriously. He successfully canvasses and supervises other can- vassers. Ini the process he bas managed to quadruple his collections - from $300 his first year to $1,800 Ini 1998. "My goal for 1999 is $2,000." he laughs. Volunteers are the driving force behund any fundralsing initiative. There are probably almost as many reasons f'or volunteering as there are vol unteers. The Kidney Foundation could not help) patients wthout these dedi- cated and committed people. The Kidney Foundation of Canada is a national, volun- teer organization. Founded in 19641, The Foundation funds kidney-related research, pro- vides services for the special needs of kidney patients and their famnilles, advocates for access to high quality health care and actively promotes awareness of, and commit- ment to, organ donation.
