Mar~h 17, 199e S Locals help propel CentraI Ontario Wolves The Central Ontario Wolves Major Peewee Triple 'A' hockey club took first place m their division thus enabling them to participate in the Tournament of Champions--OMHA Zone finals. Winner of this four-day tournament in Windsor moves on to represent the OMHA at the 'Ail Ontario' Provincial Championships. The Wolves would like to thank their sponsors, Brian and Cathy Joss from Gateway Newstand, Lindsay and Alice and Stu Irwin, Irwin Tax, Orono for the great job they've done this year. 'Century 21'novices full to 'Newcastle Kids' Kids Love Hockey out of Newcastle pulled off a huge victory over Orono's Century 21 Excel this past weekend, as both teams met on Bowman- ville's newest frozen pond. Kids Love Hockey showed little mercy, with a command- ing 3-1 lead after the second oeriod. Brad Martin, one of irono's key defencemen and part-time goalie, made an awe- some play as he scurried into his own open net and made a great save, while Jason Hoyne, Orono's regular netminder decided to leave his crease and in fact ended up very close to the blue line! Luke Green scored Century's only goal at this point of the game on a set-up by Tyler Lawrence and Ben McKelvie. Orono's defence had their work cut out for them, as Kids Love Hockey just kept pouring it on. Nikolas Richards and Brock Dunham worked great together on their line and could turn the play around at their own blue line. Also, on defence were Jeffery Mulder and Matt Mercer. Skating together, these two made lots of good stick checks. Corey Veloce along with his defense partner Brad Martin had their chance to kill Newcastle's power play and did just that. Orono's second and final goal was shoved into the net by Tyler Lawrence with Green and McKelvie earning the assists. In response, Newcastle came right back with two more goals in the third capping a 4-2 win. Century 21's last and final game of the regular season will be played Sunday at 5 p.m. Good luck guys! March Break hum- Plumbers 5-game week The Donut Gallery atoms played their second-last league game of the season on Saturday, March l3th wben hey met head on with X--Checkers Variety. Both teams played hard missing several regulars from itheir lineups due to the March Break holidays. 'Checkers' put the first point on the board at the end of the first. Mike Hisson, who was in net for Orono, couldn't take his eyes off the puck for a moment as he turned away many shots and coming up big with some terrific glove saves. The 'Gallery' gang continu- ously pelted the 'Checkers' goalie with black rubber but couldn't manage to get any shots by their net minder in neither the first nor the second periods. Tbe tbird period saw 'Checkers' add two more goals giving them' a 3-0 lead. However, Orono didn't like the looks of a shutout loss so, Doug Deboo pumped one in with Andy Kadykalo and Robyn Henderson assisting. The final score of the game was 3-1 Checkers Variety. The Russ Major Plumbing Novice Reps had no time to fool around with fives games in eight days scheduled. Their heavy scheduled began with a 2-1 road-game win over Bobcaygeon on March 4th where Alex Campney shone between the pipes. Matt Moffat scored for the Leafs from Andrew Kirkbride while Dan MacIsaac added ie insurance marker in the second unassisted. March 5th hockey action saw the novice hosts take on Manvers and downed 4-3. Dan Maclsaac, Lucas Leech and Denis Beenen scored for the Leafs with Jesse Rice drawing an assist on Leech's goal. On March 8, the novices ventured to Ops pouncing ail over their hosts 4-1. Denis Beenen scored first for Orono with Maclsaac assisting. Andrew Kirkbride scored in the second unassisted, Dan Maclsaac scored his own in the third with help from Rice. Jesse finished it off adding his own in the third with helpers going to Kirkbride and Beenen In exhibition play, Orono hosted the Clarington Toro Minor Novice 'A' team on March 9. They locals put up a valiant effort losing by one goal scored in the third. March 12th, the novices hosted Bobcaygeon in a rubber match where they revenged their previous loss by defeating the Leafs with the identical score--2-I. Brett Cairns scored Orono's only goal with Kirkebride and Leech drawing the assists. Orono Summer Sports & Hockey Registration Monday, March 22nd at Orono Arena from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. If first time registering in Orono, -please bring copy of birth certificate & health card. Registrations after March 22 subject to late fee. Public Skating at Orono Arena this Friday, March 19 from 12 -2 p.m. Admission $1.00 Provincial Championships Markham Label Peewees vs. Thedford Game one at Orono Arena is this Saturday, March 20th at 2:30 p.m.; Game two, also in Orono is Sunday, March 21st at 6 p.m. Back-to-back wins for Henderson X-mas Trees The Henderson X-mas Trees Major Tykes were on a roll winning two league games back-to-back in as many days. The 'tree farmers' finally made up their game with Blessing Travel after two previ ous cancellations. It was wortl the wait as the Orono club skat- ed to a narrow 5-4 victory when all was said and done. Matt Field led the way for Orono scoring two goals with Brian Knapp, Colin Gilbride, Allanna Ticknor and Scott Duquette assisting. Tyler Johansen scored the next Orono goal assisted by Gardiner Cole and Harley McColl. Lucas Martin added one of his own from Steve Donadel and Brian Knapp. Shelby MacDonnell rounded out the scoring with Knapp and McColl earning the assists. On the heels of that victory. Hendersons followed up with another win the next day edging out Bowmanville #4, 4-3 in another close contest. Tyler Johansen scored a hat-trick with Jon DeVries, Donadel, Martin, MacDonnell, Colin Gilbride, Cole and McColl picking up assists. Shelby MacDonnell rounded out the scoring with Scott Duquette assisting. Tyler Armstrong was stellar in net for both games making key saves when called upon. pers Donut Gallery
