4-Orono Weelv TimesWednesýda , Octobeýr 27, 1999i Newcastle Funeral H9 e Warsaw 'B' champs .. e ....... SPORTS........... The season has begun fast and furious for the Newcastle Funeral Home Bantam Leafs just coming off a run of five games in the past week. Game one of the marathon began last Tuesday in Haliburton with the locals going down 4-2 in what could be described as tough a game on and off the ice, Gane two was home to Fenelon Falls. It proved to be a rock'em sock'em affair with the scorekeeper in the penalty box being the busiest person in the arena. This game played out to a one-all tie with Chris Fields scoring Orono's lone goal on a pass from Aaron Robinson. Both teams racked up 18 penal- ty minutes. Weekend action saw the NFH bantams participate in the National 'A' Tournament in Warsaw Saturday morning. Game one saw Orono spot a strong Duoro club a whopping 5-goal lead. Then, with less than four minutes remaining in the game, the Leafs clambered back to within one-scoring four goals. However, Duoro responded slipping two quick goals past netminder Andrew Millson. Scoring for Orono in the contest were Scyzchak, Millson, Rowe and Fields with helpers going to Pisani, Millson with two and Barnes with one. Game two of the tourmnament was a matchup with the league rival Woodville team. Previously in league play, Orono was on the wrong end of a 3-2 game and here in Warsaw, they were giv n the same treat- ment. It was a fast-skating game with Orono going ahead 2-0 before Woodville finally solved goalie Darrell Kennedy. Leaf scoring was provided by McAllister and Pisani with Fields, Kirkbride, Millson and McAllister picking up assists. Because of the tournament format using the point system, the Newcastle Funeral Home boys found themselves in the 'B' final against Orangeville. The Leafs were up for this one putting on an awesome per- formance shutting out Orangeville 3-0. Pisani, Barnes and Fields were credited with the goals. Orono Lumber Midgets stucking up the wins Allin Orchard puts 2 more in win basket The Allin Orchard Peewee Leafs are building steam as they keep rolling along, adding two more to the win column this week. Last Wednesday, the apple- men tackled a hard-hitting Mariposa club in Little Britain. However, as it turned out, Mariposa was no match for the Leafs who skated to a 3-0 win. This night belonged to sniper, David Landman. Landman, who enjoyed a three- point game set up Kyle Allin who scored the game's first goal then proceeded to ring up the next two himself. Andy Bangay assisted on the first Landman goal and Kevin Ladouceur and Evan Moore assisting on the other. This was the third shut-out for the net-minding tandem of Martin and Trudeau who have been almost impenetrable this season. Orono's powerful offense and superb defense proved too much for Beaverton when the peewees hit the road for game two last week. They quickly silenced Beaverton naysayers cruising to a 5-2 victory. Scoring for the Leafs were Adam Cull with two goals, Steve Burt, Chris Moffat and Brian Pisani. Drawi, assists were Pisani with twe; Allin, Cull and Moffat also with two. The Allin Orchard Peewee Leafs rep team currently hold a perfect 6-0-0 record. With summer stretching well into fall, a hockey coach could well overlook a couple of slow starts as his team shakes off the cobwebs and begins to think hockey again. However, that logic has been tossed right out the window. This year's Orono Lumber Midgets have burst out of the starting gate notching five consecutive wins and outscoring their opponents 41- 12 along the way. The '99-2000 Leafs is com- prised of forwards Derek Heerschop, Ryan Homes, Ricky Howe, Tyler Knight, Ryan Leddy, Tyler Robinson, Jeff Thompson, Ryan and Danny Tresise. Brandon Baker, Greg Bester, Mike Knox, Paul Landers, Jamie Parry and Adam Tollett make up the defensive corps while goaltending duties will be handled by Scott Poole and Chris Burritt. Head coach John Tresise is assisted by Boyd Knox, trainer Rick Howe and manager Ray Bester. The home opener October 3, was no contest as the Lumbermen whacked Minden 12-1. October 15 saw Orono host Country C Even though Orono's Country Cafe Atom Rep team is off to a slow start, it's early yet in the season and they're just familiarizing themselves to body contact after having been introduced to it. Their first two games played were losses to Haliburton with the second game showing marked improvement with goals against cut in half. However, the loss can't be attributed to a lack of effort- the puck just won't go in the Mariposa and this match threat- ened to be a complete reversa of fortune with the visitors jumping out to a 3-1 lead and simply out-skating the Leafs. But two quick goals by the end of the second to tie put Orono back on track. From then on, the Lumbermen never looked back scoring four more to snatch a 7-4 victory. Fenelon Falls, who proved to be the toughest opponent so far this season was Orono's next victim falling 3-1 to the lumber kings back on October 17. Solid goaltending by Scott Poole and Chris Burritt con- tributed to the win. Two nights later, Orono was back up north for a chippy rematch with Minden and pre- dictably the results were very similar. This time the Leafs handed their hosts a 10-1 spanking. Highlighting the evening was a four goal out- burst by Derek Heerschop, while singles went to Leddy, Robinson, Baker, Thompson, Parry and Howe. Helpers went to Homes (3), Parry (3), Thompson (2), Leddy (2) and Knight, Knox, D. Tresise and afe's maki net! October 24 brought the Orono Lumber midgets home to face the Clarington Toro 'A' team in a hastily arranged exhi- bition match. In a hard-fought, sornetimes scrambly contest, the Leafs grit and determination resulted in a well-earned 9-5 victory. Leaf scoring was well distributed with Greg Bester and Ryan Homes leading the way with two a-piece while sin- gles went to Ryan Tresise, Dan Tresise, Derek Heerschop, Ricky Howe and Adam Tollett. Helpers went to Tyler Robinson and Jeff Thompýon (2), Homes, Tollett, Parry and Baker. To date, the Orono Lumber Midgets credit their impressive start to the season to having combined an excellent work ethic with a fast-paced offense, aggressive yet disciplined defense and solid goaltending. As they continue to refine their game, the upcoming season holds a lot of promise.
