Wednesday, January 14, 2009 Orono Weekly Times - 3 Places I've Done Time by Clifford Francis Missing the bus Last Thursday I decided to attend the Mayor's Levee on Sunday in Courtice. Why and for what reason I am not yet sure. I could have also gone to the boat show in Toronto. The sights would have been a lot better for sure. Having nothing to do on Friday I phoned to see what sort of travel plans could be made. Would there be a train or bus leaving Orono and arriving in or near Courtice? I asked a girl and she said she would check and put me on hold. A few minutes later she came back on the line and said there was no train out of Orono , which I fully understood. But a bus would leave town at 11:09. Are you sure there is a bus? And she said absolutely at 11:09. That was good enough for me. Sunday morning I was on the bench waiting, fairly well dressed, with a mickey in each one of my galoshes. Times have changed; no one serves any hard liquor at these social affairs anymore. I wonder why? By twelve o'clock no bus had showed and I was well into the first mickey to ward off the chill. At 12:30 I gave a kid five bucks to hold the bus when it came and I ran into my apartment to have a pee. When I came back down the kid and the five bucks were both gone, maybe the bus too. It never came or I missed it. I sat awhile longer and a friend came by and saw me sitting and wondered why. They were heading down to Port Hope to see a fortune teller and asked if I wanted to go with them. I knocked off the other mickey on the way down and that made me feel a little better. There was a couple of dozen people getting their fortunes told and with the heat and all I nearly went to sleep. The fortune teller always asks the simplest questions first. Do you drink? No, I said but I wouldn't mind one about now. Are you married? No, or I wouldn't be here. She took my hand and said I had a long love line. I really think she was holding, or at least looking at her own hand. She saw wealth in my future, but she had my last thirty-five bucks. The one thing she saw was a train station in the village in the not so near future. All is not grim, I guess. Things are looking good after all. Hopefully next year the Mayor's Levee will be closer, maybe even in the Village again. No worries on how to attend, just a short wee walk. down" as if it's an ice cream cone that has perhaps been left in the sun too long. We better bring it in and put it in the freezer. If we had left it there at least there would be a sticky puddle left. Obama's plan of dumping $trillions of more red ink will make the Madoff Ponzi fraud look like child's play. Reality can be a tough pill to swallow. Kelly Adams Orono Lieutenant Colonel John Conrad (L) and Clarington Museums Administration Martha Rutherford Conrad (C) extend their best wishes to MPP John O'Toole ( R) on Sunday at O'Toole's New Year's Levee. The Levee was held at the Museum's Sarah Jane Williams Heritage Centre in Bowmanville, which has just opened a dinosaur exhibit. HISTORY Continued from page 2 week for about three hours at a time. Presently we have a "system" overloaded with product including a glut of vehicles and oversized, overpriced real estate that the still employed either do not qualify for or are hesitant to venture into further debt. The set-up of contents, the map, chapter notes, the section on emigration, etc., were totally mine. When completed, Elva Reid found a person to the edit the book, a paid position.
