6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, January 14, 2009 LOCAL SPORTS Orono major peewees: `A' Champs by Christine Benedict The Orono major peewee house league team members were guests in an Omemee tournament last weekend. The team won all four games to bring home the 'A' Division championship. Cooper Phillips was astounding in net, allowing only two goals in four games. The fans were entertained by exciting plays, with Spencer Cook scoring on a shorthanded breakaway; Tyler Trimble netting the puck with an awesome shot from the blue line; and Danny Benedict with a hat trick. In regular season play, the team earned first place in the CRHL standings. The defensive play of Jimmy Chaplow, Ryan Armstrong, Tyler Trimble, Alex Bortolazzo and Jagger Piney remained impressively strong. Cameron Reilly scored a well-deserved hat trick. Goals scored in two games this week were by Devin Coldin 1g, 3a; Reilly 5g, 3a; Jarrett Lane 4g; Danny Benedict 3g, 2a; Trimble 2g, 1a; Jason McCullough 1g,2a; Mitch VanSchyndel 1g; Lucas Crosby 1g,2a; Jagger Piney 2a; Spencer Cook 2a; Travis Rysnik 1a. Coaches Carlo Bortolazzo, Dave McCullough, Pam Bortolazzo and Dale Chaplow can take a great deal of credit for the success of this team. Orono major atoms beat Newcastle to take B Championship by Bernie Kirck The Orono Leafs Major Atom Team, sponsored by Polymer Extrusions, attended the Grafton Minor Hockey Atoms House League Tournament in Grafton Ontario on January 10, 2009. Game one was against the Waterford Wildcats. Both the Leafs and the Wildcats tested the water for the first period, with each team making great saves and having great scoring opportunities. It was in the second period that Orono exploded with three unanswered goals from Mathew Rosamond, Nathan Dennis and Brent Adams. In the third period, two more goals were scored by Will Chaplow and Adams, giving the Leafs a 5 0 win and their goalie Graham Willsie a shutout. Game two was against Oshawa Christ Church. Oshawa scored once in the first and second period with Orono coming back in the second period with two goals. The first goal was scored by Samantha Iantomasi and the second by Nathan Dennis. Two penalty shots were awarded to Oshawa with Willsie stopping the first one. It came down to the third period to decide a winner. Dennis scored in the third period, but in the final minutes of the game Oshawa scored and took the 4 - 3 win. It was on to the "B" Championship final against Newcastle, and Orono was pumped for a championship win opportunity. Newcastle scored the first goal, and then added one more in the period. Orono came back with a first period goal scored by Chaplow -- a top shelf bullet - and the Leafs didn't look back, with goals scored in the second period by Anthony Zupancic and Chaplow. The fourth goal was scored in the third period and came from Dennis, giving Orono a 4 - 2 win against Newcastle and winning the "B" Championship. A plaque will soon be proudly displayed at the Orono Arena. All players should be commended for their hard work and commitment. Strong defense from Laura VanMeer, Michael Stere, Troy Nichol and Jarrett Kirck provided a wall of defense that the other teams had difficulty penetrating. Great back-checking, assists and hard work came from Justin Gjaltema, Nicholas Dixon and Sean O'Brien. Players missing were Hunter Currie and Travis Ford. Thanks to all the parents for encouragement.
