Regional Councillor Charlie Trim was the highest paid Regional Councillor last year with a remuneration and expenses package of $59,560. Trim is the Chair of the Joint York/Durham Waste Management Committee created to deal with the proposed energy from waste facility. Trim was reimbursed $2,662 for two waste technology trips he took last year. Councillor Hooper was paid an additional $1,601 in remuneration and mileage for sitting on the boards of the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA) and the Kawartha Region Conservation Authority. Councillor Foster received $300 for sitting on the CLOCA Board, as did Councillor Novak who claimed an additional $94 in mileage. Councillor Gord Robinson was paid $507, including remuneration and mileage, for being on the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority. Councillor Charlie Trim was paid $404, including mileage and remuneration, for sitting on the same board. Four Clarington board members were paid a total of $71,444 for sitting on the Board of Directors of Veridian Corporation. The Mayor was paid a total of $19,885, including $885 for conferences. Councillor Foster was paid $16,500 plus $317 in mileage and $135 in "other" expenses. Clarington board member H. Edmondson was paid a salary of $15,000, plus $699 in mileage and $262 in conferences, and $135 in "other". B. Mountford received a salary of $17,000, plus $148 in mileage, $1,181 in conferences and $180 in "other." When Councillor Robinson questioned the increase in Veridian payments since last year, it was explained that a committee of the board investigated the salary level and made a recommendation to the board in December that the remuneration to board members be increased. Last year all the board members were paid a salary of $10,800 for sitting on that board. The Mayor explained further that he gives all the money he is paid for sitting on the Veridian Board to the Bowmansville Hospital Foundation, as he does not feel he should receive the money. "It is part of my job," he said. There are 14 members who sit on the board of Veridian Connections, our local electricity supplier. Clarington owns a 13-percent share in Veridian. One of the main buildings on the site, the Administration Building, was damaged significantly. Crews discovered two other fires in the swimming pool/gymnasium building which they were able to get under control and extinguish. The fires are being treated as "suspicious," according to Clarington Fire Chief Gord Weir. The property is owned by The Kaitlin Group, who wants to demolish the building so it can develop the 100-acre site into a residential subdivision.
